List of Formula 1 designers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of Formula 1 designers includes designers whose cars have participated in or were registered for Formula 1 World Championship races (until 1980: Automobile World Championship ) by factory or customer teams. It does not include designers whose cars were only involved in Formula 1 races without world championship status. The concept of the designer is based on that of the constructor according to the Formula One Sporting Regulations of the FIA . Accordingly, a designer has to design the so-called listed parts , currently the survival cell, the front crash structure, the rollover structure and the bodywork including wings. It is sufficient to own the intellectual property; the production of individual parts can be outsourced.

background

Ten designers are currently taking part in the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship . These are highlighted in gray in the list. Only Ferrari , McLaren and Williams have had a decade-long history without a name change. Ferrari has participated in all seasons without interruption since 1950 , McLaren since 1966 and Williams since 1978 . Most of the design engineers are now based in the UK.

In 1952 and 1953 , the then automobile world championship was held temporarily with Formula 2 racing cars, as not enough starters would have competed according to the Formula 1 regulations. These races are therefore fully taken into account in the Formula 1 statistics.

Differentiation of the terms designer and team

Formula 1 constructors' cup

Until the 1981 season , the use of customer cars was permitted in Formula 1, which means that private racing teams could buy chassis from designers and take them to the races. In English-speaking countries, this situation was described by the distinction between “constructors” and “entrants” (teams). In most cases, the design engineers also had their own factory teams; Dallara , for example, as a pure chassis manufacturer without its own Formula 1 team, is an exception . Due to the allowed customer cars, a large number of designers and private teams competed in the Grand Prix between 1950 and 1980, so that pre-qualifications had to be held especially in the 1970s and 1980s, as the number of entries exceeded the number of starting positions in the race.

This list includes all designers who have developed cars that were used in Grand Prix as part of the Formula 1 World Championship. Regardless of whether it was used by factory or customer teams. With a few exceptions, the terms have been used synonymously since 1981, as each team has to construct its own chassis according to the regulations. Even in modern Formula 1, however, there were occasional use of customer cars. Satellite teams such as Super Aguri from 2006 to 2008 (chassis from Honda ) or Toro Rosso from 2007 to 2009 (chassis from Red Bull Racing ) were nevertheless accepted as independent designers. The FIA argued that the chassis developed by the teams themselves had created enough intellectual property.

List of Formula 1 designers with GP participation

Explanations for the individual columns:

  1. The "Designer" column lists the short name of the designer. Possible alternative designations under which the designer started or was known in part-time periods are given in brackets. The flag stands for the country with whose license the designer competes. It does not have to be identical with the country in which the design engineer is based.
  2. The "Period" column lists the seasons in which the designer and factory or customer teams took part in individual or all world championship races. Participation in Formula 1 races without world championship status that were held until 1983 is not recorded.
  3. The “Victories” column shows the total number of wins that a designer has achieved in Formula 1 world championship races. The wins of the factory and customer teams are added together. In general, customer team wins are rare. Only chassis from Matra (9), Lotus (5), Cooper (4), March and Ferrari (1 each) achieved victories by customer teams.
  4. The column "Best position in the constructors 'championship" shows the highest position of a constructor in the constructors' world championship, which has been awarded since 1958. The success of individual designers up to 1958 is not taken into account.
  5. In the "Comments" column you will find explanations of special features, such as B. on changes of ownership and historical contexts.

Current designers participating in the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship are highlighted in gray.

Formula 2 cars in Formula 1

At the German GP in the years 1957 - 1958 , 1966 - 1967 and 1969, starters with Formula 2 cars were allowed to fill the field on the long Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The drivers were not entitled to points, but were included in the official race result. In most cases (including Lotus , Brabham or Ferrari ) the designer took part in the race or season at the same time as Formula 1 cars. These missions are included in the main list anyway and are therefore not listed here. There was only one designer who took part in a Formula 1 race exclusively with Formula 2 cars: Protos at the 1967 German GP . BMW , Matra , Porsche and Tecno later started with their own Formula 1 designs in the world championship.
