In the volleyball tournament of the 2016 Olympic Games , twelve teams each competed for men and women. Each nation nominated a squad with twelve players.

The Chinese women have been there every time since the 1984 Games . At that time they won the gold medal and in 2004 they were able to repeat the success. For Rio they qualified as winners of the Women's Volleyball World Cup 2015 .

The Japanese women were represented at every Olympic tournament up to 1980. The greatest successes (gold in 1964 and 1976), however, were a few decades ago. As the best Asian team, Japan achieved the starting position in Rio at the qualifying tournament in their own country .

The Russian women (including the Soviet Union ) were the most successful nation in the women's Olympic tournaments with four gold and five silver medals. They only missed the 1984 tournament due to the boycott at the time. In the European qualification they beat the Netherlands in the final.

Russia
The Russians (including the Soviet Union ) took part in all Olympic tournaments except for the boycott in 1984 and have won four golds and three silver and three bronze medals each. In the final of 2012 , they prevailed against Brazil and thus went into the tournament as defending champions in Rio. At the European qualification in Berlin , they won the semi-finals against Germany and the final against France.
