The matches for the Austrian Football Championship 2002/03 were played in the " T-Mobile Bundesliga ", Austria's top division. The second division has been called Red Zac-Erste Liga since this season, including the third division teams in the three regional leagues West, Middle and East for promotion to the second highest division.

First performance level - Bundesliga

mode

The championship in the Austrian Bundesliga was contested with 10 teams, each of which met four times during the entire season. FK Austria Wien was able to break away from the competition during the first half of the spring round and won their 22nd championship title . The last title win by Wiener Veilchen was in 1993. In addition, the Viennese also won their 24th cup victory (3-0 against FC Kärnten) and their 6th Supercup title (2-1 against FC Kärnten) this season to sprinkle over it also the Vienna city hall tournament . Despite these great successes, the club separated from its coach Walter Schachner during the season because they wanted to use the chance to win Christoph Daum as coach. Walter Schachner finally took over the bottom of the table Grazer AK in October, with whom he won the first runner-up title in the club's history and was one point ahead of the Austria champions the following season.

useful information

Since FC Tirol Innsbruck stopped playing at the end of the 2001/02 preseason, it was classified as a relegated player. Therefore, Admira was spared relegation and remained in the Bundesliga.

The champions Austria Wien and the runner-up Grazer AK played in the qualifying round for the 2003/04 Champions League, but both failed before the group stage, but qualified for the UEFA Cup , as did Austria Salzburg and the cup finalist FC Kärnten .

    General

In the 2002/03 season of the First Division, SV Mattersburg was able to become the superior champions with a 14 point lead and thus secure promotion to the top Austrian league for the first time in the club's history. After SC Eisenstadt and SC Neusiedl am See, Mattersburg was only the third Burgenland club to achieve this. The promoted sports club had to relegate from the league. After Senate 5 of the Bundesliga in the first instance refused the clubs LASK Linz and DSV Leoben the license for the next season, the Dornbachers speculated about the league's whereabouts. The permanent neutral court of arbitration of the Bundesliga, however, as the last instance granted both the LASK and the Leobenern the license for the 1st division in 2003/04 and thus sentenced the sports club to relegation to the Regionalliga Ost.
