The Aachener streetcar and power supply AG (ASEAG) operates the public transport in the Aachen region . Despite its name, it is now a pure bus company. It carries around 71.118 million passengers annually on 101 lines in an area of 520 km². This makes it the largest German transport company that relies solely on buses. The length of the line network is 1788 km. The ASEAG network is integrated into the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV).
In the mid-2000s, the city set a savings target for the company, which is why it has continuously streamlined the range of routes since then and adapted it more to requirements. Since the end of the 2000s, new drivers have only been hired through the subsidiary ESBUS .
In view of the strong growth of the university expansion area in Melaten, the route network is growing continuously. At times, a tram solution was thought of to relieve the regular traffic to Melaten, for which working groups were set up with the support of the Cologne KVB.
On July 1, 2006, the company, like many transport companies before it, introduced controlled entry in the Aachen city area (previously gradually in what was then the Aachen district). Passengers must get on at the front door and show the driver their valid ticket or purchase a ticket. Only getting out of the vehicle is permitted at the rear doors. ASEAG hopes that this measure lowering the Dodger quote. With the introduction of the City XL tariff on October 1, 2009, the regulation in the area of validity of the tariff was repealed. It continues to exist in the rest of the city and the city region.
Companies
history
In many cities, the local municipal utilities and public transport companies played a major role in the development and development of the surrounding area and the urban area, as was the case with ASEAG. The forerunner company, the Aachener und Burtscheider Horse Railway Company, was founded as early as 1880 . Not long after the Prussian Small Railroad Act came into force , it was re-established in 1894 as the Aachener Kleinbahn-Gesellschaft (AKG) and began electrifying and expanding the network. Until the beginning of the Second World War, the AKG network extended to Sief and Köpfchen and in the south to Zweifall (then Monschau district ), in the east to Weisweiler (then Düren district ) and in the north to Mariadorf . AKG's S line and, from 1909, line 25, came from Raeren and Eynatten via Sief and Schmithof to Walheim - from 1916 only between Sief and Walheim - and could be used increasingly for the transport of goods for lime production in Sief and Schmithof . In Schmithof, the tram embankment and the loading ramp can still be seen clearly.
On March 21, 1900, the Rheinische Elektricitäts- und Kleinbahnen AG (REKA) emerged from various companies and carried out public transport in the Aachen area under this name until 1942 . In 1907, AKG took over the majority of shares in REKA. In 1942, the entire REKA assets were transferred to AKG and the company was renamed ASEAG at the same time.
In 1944, despite difficulties caused by the war, the Aachen trolleybus was opened as line 51 from Kaiserplatz to Baesweiler. With a length of 19.3 km, this line was Germany's longest trolleybus line until it was closed on February 3, 1974. Since the last tram line (line 15) was discontinued on September 28, 1974, ASEAG has been a pure omnibus company.
Ownership structure
ASEAG partner
ASEAG is 94.9% subsidiary of Energieversorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH Aachen (EVA), founded in 1972, and the city of Aachen has a 5.1% stake in the company. The shareholders of the EVA are the city of Aachen with 99.99% and the city region of Aachen with 0.01% . As a result, ASEAG is de facto a municipal company.
The company was listed on the stock exchange until 2005. In August 2004 the general meeting passed the resolution to transfer all shares of the minority shareholders to the city of Aachen (buyback). Due to pending actions for rescission, the resolution could only become legally effective in August 2005, after which the listing on the stock exchange was discontinued on August 15, 2005 ( delisting ).
ASEAG participations

ASEAG transport offer
Line network
Due to the combined state and city limits to the west, ASEAG operates several cross-border lines. So drive z. B. the 14 to Eupen (B) and the line 24 to Kelmis (B), the lines 25 and 33 to Vaals (NL), the line 34 to Kerkrade (NL) and the (express bus) line 44 to Heerlen (NL) ). The night bus lines N4 and N7 also cross borders, the line N4 goes to Vaals (NL), the line N7 to Kelmis (B).
Some trips are carried out by subcontractors on behalf of ASEAG, these include the companies Elka, Glückauf Reisen, Haas, Höninger, Koppermann, Langen, Rosenbaum, BVR Busverkehr Rheinland , SADAR, Schloemer and Taeter Aachen .
Many of the lines with a common last digit are bundled. For example, lines 11, 21 and 31 are all on the Haaren –Jülicher Straße - Aachen bus station - Elisenbrunnen - Aachen main station - Burtscheid the same route, but also offer other destinations. The same principle exists on many other lines, e.g. B. the 2, 5 and 7 lines. There are also deviations from this, as some lines have changed in the course of history, but it remains a feature of the Aachen bus service. Since March 2016, ASEAG has also been operating an on- call bus system in Monschau under the name NetLiner, which was also introduced in Aachen-Süd in June 2019.
With the timetable change on December 10, 2017, ASEAG took over the concessions for all lines licensed by the Aachen city region, after they had made a direct award as an overall service. The previous concessionaires Taeter Aachen and BVR Busverkehr Rheinland continue to operate as subcontractors on their previous lines.
Remarks:
- Line 14: Community concession with Transport en Commun .
- Line 44: Community concession with Arriva.
- EW5 line: only runs on weekends during the summer holidays.
Night express
ASEAG operates a separate night bus network. This consists of ten lines (N1 to N9 and N60), which serve the largest line axes with a modified line path. The night lines operate on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. from the Elisenbrunnen / bus station. The lines run out of the city in a star shape.
Vehicle fleet
ASEAG owns 233 buses of its own with the so-called Red Fleet (as of 2018). Some of the older buses are sold to subcontractors, which in turn are under contract with ASEAG. The fleet consists of 72 standard buses (including a hybrid bus ) and 138 articulated buses of various series of the Citaro type from Mercedes-Benz , including thirteen 18.75-meter MAN articulated buses (Lion's City GL) , as well as seven CapaCity and 6 double articulated buses of the type VanHool AGG 300 . In the course of 2014, a Citaro articulated bus originally supplied with a hybrid drive was converted to a purely electric drive by the ASEAG workshop and presented to the public in May 2015. In addition, a minibus based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 65 was tested in cooperation with the RWTH , which was converted to a purely electric drive by the IKA and ISEA institutes as part of a publicly funded project. At the end of 2016, the first of a total of 15 Sileo S18 electric buses that had been ordered arrived at ASEAG. It will initially be used on lines 33 and 73 in the course of 2017. At the end of October 2019, 7 of 12 Mercedes-Benz eCitaro electric buses ordered were delivered by EvoBus . There is also the option to purchase a further 15 battery-powered articulated electric buses from EvoBus in 2020 and 2021.
In the meantime, almost the entire vehicle fleet of ASEAG is low-floor, with mainly full-fledged low-floor buses and now also several low-entry buses belonging to the fleet. The last high-floor bus is a MAN SG 242 (car 750, built in 1992), which is rarely in regular service and is to be kept as a museum bus. At the summer festival in September 2014, this bus was presented fully restored.
In 2015, the company purchased five VDL Citeas vehicles from this manufacturer for the first time, after a demonstration vehicle had previously been tested for a year.
VanHool AGG 300 double articulated buses have also been in service since 2005 and are called Öcher Long Wajong in Öcher Platt . Regular line use was preceded by a two-year trial run. With a special permit from TÜV , the first use of such vehicles in Germany was realized from May 7, 2003, initially with two borrowed AGG 300s from Utrecht , and from 2005 with two of their own vehicles. In February 2008, another six double articulated buses went into operation.
For special occasions, individual vehicles are specially designed, e.g. As bus 136 on the occasion of the rise of Alemannia Aachen in the Bundesliga of 2006.
In early December 2007, the ASEAG with ten new articulated buses of the type Citaro O 530 G first vehicles in operation, where the next stop is announced automatically. In addition, the line, the destination and the next four stops are displayed on TFT monitors. In addition, the vehicles received a new on-board computer, which combines the previously separate RBL and EFD (electronic ticket printer) devices . The entire fleet - as well as the subcontractors' wagons - is now equipped with this technology.
In 2009 the first two low-entry buses were registered with ASEAG. They come from Mercedes-Benz.
Due to the gradual replacement of the vehicle fleet, the company has owned more articulated vehicles than standard vehicles since the 2000s . So far, this has been exactly the opposite. It is the same with buses from Mercedes-Benz. While the procurements were almost balanced between MAN and Mercedes-Benz up to 2000, the new acquisitions in the 2000s did not add any new MAN buses to the fleet. In the meantime, after a break of almost 10 years, MAN buses have been bought again.
Line sponsorship
With the lines 3 A / B as Fraunhofer lines , an Aachen bus line was sponsored for the first time with the timetable change on June 14, 2009. Two articulated and four solo buses from the latest delivery were given a corresponding design, in which they have been in use since October 27, 2009, two solo buses have since lost their advertising. The interior design of the vehicles has also been adapted accordingly. Every bus advertises one of the participating Aachen Fraunhofer institutes IPT , ILT and IME with the outside advertisement . In addition, stops at which the lines run have been marked with special signs and posted information about the institutes. The sponsorship is primarily aimed at arousing the interest of students in professional prospects at the Fraunhofer institutes.
Light rail
A light rail system was to be built on the route between Klinikum - City - Brand by 2019. The campus railway as the first construction phase of a future Aachen light rail network should be 12.3 kilometers long and cost around 243 million euros including the depot and vehicles. In a referendum on March 10, 2013, the implementation was rejected with 66.34% of the votes cast.

Shuttle party
The shuttle party has taken place every six months since 1997 and is an offer that is mainly aimed at young students. Various restaurants and entertainment establishments, together with the city magazine Klenkes, are organizing a program designed to give new students in particular the opportunity to get to know the local leisure activities. ASEAG carries out the shuttle traffic between the participating venues. The ticket for 5.00 euros (as of 2008) is valid for the shuttle bus and admission. In April 2007, a corresponding program from the Aachen University Radio was broadcast on the shuttle buses for the first time .
Others
As one of the first companies in the Aachen region, ASEAG purchased two automated external defibrillators (AED) in 2005 and trained 44 employees as first aiders. With the help of an AED z. B. when a cardiac arrest occurs, the minutes until the emergency doctor arrives can be bridged.
The company promotes the use of car sharing in cooperation with Cambio CarSharing . ASEAG subscription customers receive travel vouchers and customers of the car sharing company receive discounts when purchasing an ASEAG subscription.
A customer magazine called Schnack uus (High German roughly: straight ahead ) appears three times a year.
ESBUS GmbH
The business activity of ESBUS (Eschweiler Bus- und Servicegesellschaft mbH) consists of order traffic for ASEAG on its licensed lines. ESBUS does not have its own licenses and therefore does not have its own route network. In 2014 it employed over 100 drivers.
On August 8, 2000, the shares in Horst Taeter Verkehrsunternehmung GmbH , based in Eschweiler, were acquired by ASEAG and the company was renamed on May 23, 2003. In the meantime, ESBUS serves as a company for newly hired drivers at ASEAG. A minimum number of 325 drivers directly employed by ASEAG was contractually agreed, which was not achieved in the course of 2016, whereupon staff from ESBUS switched to ASEAG for the first time to achieve this minimum number.
Fleet
The company uses several type O 530 low-floor solo buses . With the exception of their own vehicle, the wagons are permanently on loan from ASEAG's inventory.
Carnival Society
In 1949, athletes from the ASEAG Station Eschweiler company sports association founded the KG Fidele Trammebülle 1949 e. V. Fidele Trammebülle means lively tram workers . In the 1967 session, the association took part in the Eschweiler Rose Monday procession for the first time with a theme car .
