Steve Davis / Achievements

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steve Davis during the 2010 Paul Hunter Classic

This article lists all of the achievements of snooker player Steve Davis . Davis was the dominant player of the 1980s, winning the World Cup and UK Championship six times and the Masters three times. In 1988 he was voted British Sportsman of the Year as the only snooker player to date .

Davis began his professional career in 1978 and quickly rose to the top of the world. After winning the UK Championship in 1980, he won the World Snooker Championship in 1981 . By winning the Masters in 1982 , he won all three Triple Crown tournaments and thus fully established himself in the top places in the world rankings. After an early exit at the 1982 World Cup , he won the following two editions again and finally rose to the top of the world.

After two defeats in the next two World Cup finals (including the legendary 1985 World Cup final against Dennis Taylor ), Davis won all three other World Cups by the end of the decade, the last of them with the highest final victory ever. In the following decade, Davis won significantly fewer tournaments as Stephen Hendry now dominated the sport. Even though Davis temporarily slipped out of the top 16 in the world rankings, he stayed on the tour in the new millennium. He surprisingly reached the final of the UK Championship in 2005 , which he lost to Ding Junhui and made it into the top 16 on his 50th birthday in 2007. In the last few years of his career, Davis has shifted more and more to commenting, but he stayed Professional player until well into the 2010s. Shortly after the death of his father Bill, he announced his retirement from active snooker as part of the 2016 World Snooker Championship .
