3rd qualifying round

From the third qualifying round onwards there were two separate pots: national champions were drawn only against other national champions, while “pursuers”, i.e. clubs placed second, third or fourth, were drawn only against other “pursuers”. Losing teams moved to the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League play-offs .

The Danish champions ( FC Copenhagen won the Superliga 2012/13 ) were allowed to compete directly in the group stage, as the defending champions (FC Bayern Munich) had already qualified directly for the group stage through the national league. The Cypriot master moved up for this. In the First Division 2012/13 was APOEL Nicosia Master.

Since the draw for the third qualifying round took place before the results from the second were available, the higher club coefficient for the winner of a game was used for the draw. The drawing took place on July 19, 2013; the pairings were for 30./31. July and 6/7. Scheduled August 2013.

Play-offs

The fourth and final qualifying round was called the "play-off" to improve marketing opportunities. From this round onwards, all games were marketed centrally by UEFA in order to generate greater media attention and thus increased advertising income. Losing teams competed in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League group stage .

On August 14, 2013, Metalist Kharkiv was banned from all European competitions in 2013/14 by the UEFA Chamber of Appeal due to involvement in a 2008 manipulation scandal . UEFA then decided that PAOK Thessaloniki would play in the play-offs instead of Metalist Kharkiv.

The first legs took place on 20./21. and the second leg on 27./28. August 2013.

The following pairings were drawn for the play-offs:

Group stage

32 teams from 18 national associations took part in the group stage. 22 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs (five each via the champions path and the placement path) from the qualifying rounds.

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16, the group third played in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League , the group fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–8 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. higher number of goals scored
  8. Club coefficients

The 32 teams qualified for the group stage were divided into four lottery pots of eight teams each based on their club coefficient (KK), and one team from each lottery pot was drawn into one of the eight groups (A to H). The Bayern Munich was performed as defending No. 1 on the seedings, regardless of his club coefficients. Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. In addition, it was ensured that teams from one association can play on different days by distinguishing between "red groups" (A – D) and "blue groups" (E – H). The respective TV stations were allowed to wish for team pairs that should not be drawn for the same group color. The draw took place in Monaco on August 29th .

Stadiums, whose name sponsor is not an advertising partner of UEFA, theoretically have an advertising-free name during the games: The Emirates Stadium in Arsenal Stadium , the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen Stadium , the Signal Iduna Park in BVB-Stadion Dortmund , the Allianz Arena in football Arena Munich , the Etihad Stadium in the City of Manchester Stadium and the Türk Telekom Arena in Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi .

The game was played on six days from September 17 to December 11, 2013. The uniform kick-off time was 8:45 pm CEST or CET ; the two clubs from Russia played their home games at 6:00 p.m. CEST / CET and 8:00 p.m. local time due to the time difference.

Knockout phase

Round of 16

For the round of 16, eight pairings each of a group runner-up and a group winner were drawn; teams from a national association and previous opponents in the group phase were not allowed to be drawn against each other. The consequence of these determinations was that the qualified teams from England and Germany could only have five potential opponents in the round of 16, while all others could have seven. The draw took place on December 16, 2013 at 12:00 (CET) in Nyon. The first legs took place on 18./19. and 25./26. February 2014 and the second leg on 11./12. and 18./19. March 2014. Since the introduction of the round of 16 mode in 2003/04, all eight group winners made it to the quarter-finals for the first time.

Chelsea had stipulated in the loan agreement that if Courtois played a competitive game against Chelsea, the Londoners would have to be paid 3 million euros per match.
