Problems

Incorrect entries

Place name sign with incorrect place name

Despite the very lengthy process, which took months and years, there were repeated incorrect entries in the register, which were even transferred to the place-name signs in this incorrect form.

Often the double consonants typical of the German language (Gorek instead of Gorrek, Malnie instead of Mallnie) or hyphens were left out in multi-part names (Ellguth Turawa instead of Ellguth-Turawa) or the letters s were used instead of the ß (capital and sweet instead of capital and sweet). The place Zwoos was registered as Zwoss. On the other hand, forms were used that are wrong or that did not exist historically. Including Schiedlisk instead of free pipa.

Removal of bilingual boards

When boards were renewed or had to be replaced, it even happened that, with little foresight, the German-language names were simply omitted from the new boards and only reassembled after long discussions. For example at the train stops in the Chronstau community.

When several places from the neighboring communities were incorporated into Opole in 2017, all bilingual place-name signs were removed and replaced by the town's place-name signs. Although mayor Arkadiusz Wiśniewski announced bilingual district boards in advance, these have not yet been implemented.

Arbitrary restrictions

Although the minority law only forbids names that were introduced during the time of National Socialism, i.e. in the period from 1933 to 1945, the responsible commission also refused to allow names that were introduced before 1933 without any basis whatsoever. These include the place names Lichtenwalde and Oderwalde. The latter was only entered through the intervention of local politicians.

Prevention of German place names

Although other places also wanted the introduction of German place names, the council members blocked further processes that would be necessary for their introduction, especially in communities with a dominant Polish population. Above all the communities of Olesno (Rosenberg) and Ozimek (Malapane). The municipalities of Strzelce Opolskie (Groß Strehlitz) and Zawadzkie (Zawadzki) also did not want to allow citizen surveys for a long time, but finally allowed them.

Changes

While the PO was still in government, work was initially carried out on the amendment of the minority protection law in order to adapt the law after nine years. After the PiS party took office in 2014, the final draft of the legislative amendment was adopted by the government in 2015, but rejected in 2015 with the veto of President Andrzej Duda and its entry into force was prevented.
