The 49th Eurovision Song Contest took place on May 12 and 15, 2004 in Istanbul ( Turkey ) under the motto Under the Same Sky . It was the largest event in this competition to date; 36 countries participated. The programs were moderated by Meltem Cumbul and Korhan Abay .
particularities
The German participant was in the show Germany 12 Points! Awarded: It was Max Mutzke with Can't Wait Until Tonight who came in eighth in the end. The representatives of Austria's tie break with Du bist were only 21. Switzerland had to be eliminated from the semi-finals with zero points, singer Piero Esteriore had a bald head the day after. The song Celebrate! should be the last Swiss song until 2011 that was chosen by preliminary decision. Due to the persistently poor results, even a complete withdrawal of Switzerland from the Grand Prix was under discussion.
This year, the Barbara Dex Award , initiated by a fan site, was presented for the eighth time. The “worst” outfit of the competition is to be awarded with this price, which should not be taken very seriously. This year's winner was Sanda Ladosi from Romania.
Attendees
Albania , Andorra , Serbia-Montenegro and Belarus took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Monaco returned to competition after a 25 year hiatus. Due to the large number of participants, which would exceed the time of any broadcast, a semi-final was introduced. 22 countries competed against each other on May 12th. The ten best qualified for the final on May 15th. There they met the 14 countries that in the previous year had already qualified for the final, among them Germany and Austria . For the sixth time ever and for the first time in two consecutive years, there were no returning interpreters at the ESC.
Voting procedure
Since 2004, the points in all countries have been determined using televoting . The overwhelming majority of the participating countries have already involved television viewers in the awarding of points in the past. The ten songs with the most votes receive 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points. If two countries have the same number of points, the higher position will be given to the country that has received points from most countries. If this criterion is not decisive, of these two countries the country with the most 12 points is positioned higher, possibly with the most 10 points and so on. If both countries are the same, both countries have won.
When awarding points in the final, countries that were eliminated in the qualifying round can also vote. So far, the votes of the countries in the starting order have been obtained in the final. This is now done according to the sequence according to the ISO country code abbreviation.
Semifinals
The semi-finals took place on May 12, 2004 (CEST). The top ten countries qualified for the final. They are highlighted in light green here.
In the semifinals, places 11 to 22 were announced and it was clear that Switzerland was left empty-handed. There was also an error when displaying these places, as the votes from Croatia and Monaco were not calculated correctly. The correct point allocation did not influence the qualification of the 10 qualified countries. The places 1 to 10 were not revealed, however, in order to avoid interference. Since 2005 all semi-final results have been kept secret until after the final.

final
The final took place on May 15, 2004, 9:00 p.m. (CEST).
Before the final, in addition to the German competitor Max Mutzke , the contributions from Ukraine and Greece were considered favorites in the betting offices and the German public . For the first time there was a direct duel between the songwriters Stefan Raab and Ralph Siegel (as producer, neither text nor melody come from him this time) in the international finals. Ralph Siegel, represented in this competition for around 30 years, reached the final with Malta .
