The J.League Division 2 2002 was the fourth season of the Japanese J.League Division 2 . Twelve clubs took part in it. The season began on March 3rd and ended on November 24th, 2002, due to the World Cup taking place in Japan and South Korea , no games were played between May 12th and July 5th.
Master and thus promoted to the J.League Division 1 2003 was Oita Trinita . In addition to Ōita, the runner-up Cerezo Osaka also rose.
mode
The season was played in a double double round tournament, the clubs played four times against each other, twice at home and twice away; a total of 44 games per team resulted. The extension with the golden goal rule, which was used in the previous seasons in the event of a tie after 90 minutes, was deleted without replacement.
There were three points for a win, and one point for each team in the case of a draw. The table was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The two clubs with the most points were promoted to J.League Division 1 2003 at the end of the season .
Attendees
A total of twelve teams took part in the season. Here rose the previous year's champion Kyōto Purple Sanga and the runner-up Vegalta Sendai in Division 1 2002 ; Kyōto returned directly to this division after leaving Division 1 at the end of the 2000 season, the Sendai team, however, reached a top division of Japanese football for the first time in their history.
The two promoted teams were replaced by the worst two teams in Division 1 in 2001 . The table penultimate Avispa Fukuoka returned here after six years, the bottom of the table Cerezo Osaka after seven years in a second highest Japanese football league; Both clubs were part of the first Japan Football League before they were accepted into the J.League .
For the first time since Division 2 was founded, there was no promoter due to a lack of suitable candidates, a situation that did not change in the years to come until Thespa Kusatsu and Tokushima Vortis were accepted for the 2005 season .

- Albirex Niigata played eleven games in both stadiums.
- Avispa Fukuoka played a home game at the Honjō Athletic Stadium in Kitakyūshū , Fukuoka.
- Cerezo Osaka used two of the three stadiums in Nagai Park during the season. Ten games were played in the 47,000-seat Nagai Stadium and nine games in the 15,000-seat Nagai Second Stadium. In addition, two games took place at Ōjiyama Stadium in Ōtsu , Shiga and one game at Suzuka Sports Garden in Suzuka , Mie .
- Mito HollyHock played ten home games each at Hitachinaka City Stadium in Hitachinaka , Ibaraki and at Kasamatsu Stadium in Naka , Ibaraki. In addition, there were two home games at Mito Stadium in Mito , Ibaraki.
- Ōita Trinita played twelve home games at the Ōita Athletic Stadium and eight games at the Ōita Stadium. There was also a home game at the Nagasaki Athletic Stadium in Nagasaki , Nagasaki and at the Kumamoto Suizenji Stadium in Kumamoto , Kumamoto .
- Ōmiya Ardija played two home games at Saitama Stadium in 2002 and one home game at Urawa Komaba Stadium .
- Sagan Tosu played two home games at the Saga Athletic Stadium in Saga , Saga.
- Yokohama FC played ten home games at Mitsuzawa Football Stadium and six games at Mitsuzawa Athletic Stadium , four games at Yumenoshima Stadium in Tokyo and one game each at Yokohama International Stadium and Edogawa Athletic Stadium in Tokyo.
