Andrew Stevenson (born January 21, 1784 in Culpeper County , Virginia , † January 25, 1857 in Albemarle County , Virginia) was an American politician of the Democratic Republican Party . From 1827 to 1833 he was the 16th speaker of the House of Representatives .

Early years

After finishing school, Stevenson attended the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg . Following his law degree and admission to the bar, he practiced in Richmond . He was also politically active and was elected to the Virginia House of Representatives in 1809 , to which he was a member until 1816 and again from 1818 to 1821. From 1812 to 1815 he was also its speaker .

Congressman

In 1821 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a supporter of the Democratic Republican Party after failing in two previous elections. He was also elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for three terms, from December 3, 1827 to March 4, 1833. He was a member of the House of Representatives until his resignation on June 2, 1834. In 1836 he became ambassador to Great Britain under President Andrew Jackson , which he remained until 1841 when Edward Everett took over from him . He ended his political career and moved to Albemarle County in Virginia. In 1845 he was only elected to the board of directors ( Board of visitors ) of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville , in 1856 the rector of the university. He died on January 25, 1857 at his home in Albemarle County and was buried in Enniscorthy Cemetery , Esmont .
