Haas or de Haas is a family name common in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the USA and eastern France .

Origin and meaning

The name Haas and the Low German form de Haas are mostly derived from the Low German word Haso , which meant " hare ", but could also denote a nimble runner or a strange or crazy person, but other possible interpretations are also suggested, see above u. a. a house name that derives from the river Hase (river) , the settlement Hasdorf , a "Haus zum Hasen" or Hessen or the noble family of those zu Hasenburg and much more. a. a derivation from the word "Har-" for flax , from the Middle High German haz = "hostile attitude or hatred" or the nickname Hasso , sometimes Haas and de Haas are also regarded as a Jewish-Low German family name. Haas first appeared as a surname from around the 15th century in southern Germany and spread from there. Even today, the spread of the name in the south-west of Germany is noticeable, while the Haase variant predominates in central and northern Germany. Early variants of the name appear for the first time in the 12th century, the first documented bearer of the name Haas (e) was a man named "Haas (e) der Jud" in the 14th century. When numerous bearers of the surname Haas emigrated to the USA , the name was often Americanized as Hays .
