history
The area of today's city of Bassum was settled early on, as the barrows in Stühren and the Thingstätte near the Freudenburg indicate.
The noblewoman Liutgart gave her entire paternal inheritance in 858 in order to found a canonical monastery. This monastery was consecrated as Birxinon (Bassum) monastery by Archbishop Ansgar von Bremen . In 1541 the Reformation was introduced by Count Jobst I von Hoya.
The Counts of Hoya , whose domain included the Freudenberg office , were first mentioned in a document in 1202. Around 1230, Freudenberg Castle was built by the Counts of Hoya, which was first mentioned in 1388 as "Slot Vroydenbergh". When the Counts of Hoya died out in 1582, the Freudenberg office with the hamlets of Bassum, Freudenberg and Loge and seventeen villages fell to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel , while Bassum monastery fell to Calenberg and Wolfenbüttel, while Neubruchhausen fell to Celle.

badges and flags
Blazon : “Divided by silver (white) and gold (yellow); above a floating upright green branch with three linden leaves, below two turned away red-reinforced black bear paws; as a shield holder two soaring silver (white) horses , which stand on an ornate golden (yellow) base , in the upper coat of arms a three-towered red wall crown . "
The city of Bassum received its coat of arms on November 24, 1927 after the magistrate had applied for the same on March 24, 1927 . It shows a two-part shield , in the upper half of which three green, upward-pointing linden leaves can be seen on a branch on a white background. Due to the numerous linden trees that line the streets of the city, the city of Bassum was given the title "Lindenstadt". The linden leaves of the coat of arms symbolize the merger of the three spots Bassum, Loge and Freudenberg in 1896. In the lower half of the coat of arms, two outward-pointing bear claws are shown on a yellow background. The bear paws are the symbol of the Counts of Hoya , who owned the area around Bassum until 1582. On the entire coat of arms there is also a wall crown as a symbol for the Freudenburg. The shield is framed by two silver horses, which are the symbol of the state of Lower Saxony. The city colors (green-white-yellow) result from the colors of the shield: green the linden leaves, white the background of the upper half of the shield and yellow the background of the lower half of the shield.

Bassum Abbey
The Bassum monastery (= women's pen or canonical pen ). is the oldest monastery in Lower Saxony. In the European Union the monastery in Bassum is the only still existing canonical monastery.
In 858, the noble lady Liutgart gave her entire paternal inheritance and founded the monastery so that the noble families of the country had the opportunity to give their unmarried daughters a Christian education and care. The monastery was consecrated by Ansgar , Archbishop of Hamburg and Bremen (831–865). Liutgart was also the first abbess of the monastery. To this day, the monastery is run by an abbess. Today's abbess has been Isabell von Kameke since 2008.
The monastery has been Protestant since 1541. Up to 10 canonesses used to live in the monastery. In contrast to monasteries , they were allowed to own private property in the monastery, and they were also allowed to leave the monastery. Their main task was the solemn praise of God, the intercession for the dead and the care of the poor.
Today the monastery still has 10 canonesses (capitulars), but - except for the abbess and her deputy, the dean - there is no longer any residence obligation, so that they live in their respective hometowns, where they pursue normal professions - feel them but join the pen and meet annually for the session of the chapter. Women no longer have to be noble.
The monastery is the nucleus of the city of Bassum, which was then called Birsina.
The current abbey was built in half-timbered buildings in 1754 under the abbess Margaretha Eleonora von Estorff (term of office 1751 to 1776) after she had the old abbess house demolished. Today's abbess house is open to visitors and houses a variety of art-historically significant objects. On the upper floor there is the chapter house with hand-painted, revolving wall covering made of burlap (a slight jute fabric) from the year 1781 (1989 restored) and a Kanonikuszimmer that the starting and arriving canon served to house. In the canon room there is a ceiling painting with simple tendrils. In addition to the abbess house, the former canons' houses were built around the courtyard. The Bassum Abbey also has a monastery garden and there is a monastery forest nearby.
Bassum Collegiate Church
The Gothic brick church from the middle of the 13th century is significant in terms of art history. According to other sources (information board in front of the collegiate church) it was built around 1200 in a late Romanesque style. The three-aisled hall church with transept was built in the shape of a cross.
In addition to the famous Bassumer bundle of columns, there are a number of abbess epitaphs inside , such as the choir room , restored in 2005 in the historicist style of the 19th century Hanover school , with the unique plaster inlay floor. In the south transept is the tomb of Abbess Anna Countess von Hoya, who died in 1585 . The abbesses' burial place was originally located under the floor of the church.
In a niche on the west wall of the south transept there is a statue from the 19th century depicting St. Viktor ( Viktor von Xanten ), one of the two namesake of the church. A reliquary of St. Victor from around 1250 has also been preserved.
In 1327 a fire destroyed almost all buildings of the monastery, and the church was also badly damaged. The church was then rebuilt in the Gothic style. The inside of the church with its Gothic hall contrasts with the outside of the church as a Romanesque-looking cross-shaped building with the squat church tower in the center of the cross ( crossing tower ) and the Romanesque gable on the east side. Before the fire of 1327 the collegiate church had Westwerk two towers that were not rebuilt.
Freudenburg
Opposite the monastery, on the other side of "Bremer Straße", is the Freudenburg. Until the dissolution of the Freudenberg Office, Freudenberg Castle was the seat of the clerks, after which the district court was located. After the district court was moved to Bassum in 1879, it remained the district judge's official residence until 1966. Today the Brug Freudenberg is a European seminar and conference center of the VHS in the district of Diepholz.
Jewish Cemetery
The Jewish cemetery in Bassum is one of eight well-preserved Jewish cemeteries in the Diepholz district. On the east of the B 61 after Sulingen nearby cemetery are 28 grave stones from the years 1852-1942 for Jewish dead. The last Jewish woman buried here was Josefine Baehr, who took her own life in 1938 after her husband was deported. Her husband Leopold Baehr was murdered in the concentration camp , and the year of death 1942 was added to his wife's tombstone. For Leopold Baehr and three other victims of the Nazi dictatorship, four stumbling blocks by the artist Gunter Demnig were laid in Bassum on December 1, 2009 . see also → List of stumbling blocks in Bassum
During the Second World War , some soldiers' graves were set up for Russian prisoners of war in the Jewish cemetery.
Green spaces and recreation
The Freudenburg am Klosterbach is surrounded by a park and is used for advanced training events, especially the adult education center (VHS). The Agende21 group is creating the monastery park between the Curata senior center, the outdoor pool and the monastery. The Bassumer Utkiek is the highest point in the Diepholz district. The former garbage dump has been converted into a local recreation area.
Petermoor animal park
The zoo is home to around 500 animals from around 80 native and exotic species on an area of three hectares .
The center of the zoo is a large lake with numerous water birds. The walk petting zoo are pot-bellied pigs and goats kept. The monkey house is one of the latest additions .
The city of Bassum is responsible for the park. The zoo association founded in 1967 with over 200 members acts as a non-material and financial sponsor. In 2007 the zoo was the first facility in Germany to be certified as an Archepark by the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animals . Since 2015 the zoo has been officially allowed to call itself "zoo".

Bassum cemetery
The oldest part of the cemetery was opened on Eschenhauser Straße as early as 1850 . Initially, only the abbesses and canonesses found their final resting place here . There was also a crypt in this area until 1967. But since it was haunted again and again by burglars, it was filled with water. In earlier times, the Bassum pastors , teachers and a provost were also buried not far from the abbess graves. In earlier times, each village in Bassum had its own area in the old part of the cemetery (Bassum parish ).
Today the cemetery extends over an area of around 5.2 hectares with around 3,500 grave sites. The funeral ceremonies were held in a half-timbered chapel that was destroyed by fire until 1971 . The current chapel was built in 1972 and offers seats for 180 mourners. In 2003 the parish renovated the extension of the chapel. It has a sun-drenched atrium , a meeting room for relatives, social rooms for employees, toilets and three modern laying out rooms.
At the Bassumer Friedhof, the main paths are lined with linden trees. Seen from the air, they result in the shape of a cross.
There are two grave fields for soldiers on the site . 26 soldiers who were killed by low-flying aircraft in Bassum in the last years of the war are buried in one field. 29 prisoners of war from the former Soviet Union , Romania, Hungary, Belgium and Spain are buried in the other field. They all died in captivity in May and June 1945 .
In the vicinity of the children's graves , which were laid out in the cemetery in 1915, is the grave field of the “star children ”. As part of a funeral service, an urn from stillborn children from the St. Ansgar Clinic Association (Bassum, Diepholz, Sulingen) is buried here several times a year .
Common grave fields for coffins and urns are located in the new part of the cemetery on the railway line. A ballot box burial ground is also being created here; it will later have the shape of a diamond .
