The Baldwin County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Milledgeville , named after former Governor John Milledge .

The county covers an area of 693 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hancock County , Washington County , Wilkinson County , Jones County, and Putnam Counties .
history
Baldwin County was formed on May 11, 1803 and named after Abraham Baldwin , one of two signatories to the Georgia Constitution and founder of the University of Georgia . In June 1806, the first county government meeting was held in a log cabin in Hillsborough, about 25 miles away in present-day Jasper County . In 1807 the young Balwin County was divided into four more counties: Morgan, Jones, Putnam, and Randolph Counties. Randolph County was later renamed Jasper County.
Carl Vinson (1883-1981), a long-time member of the US Congress, came from Baldwin County .

54.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 41.5% as African-Americans , 0.2% as Indians and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 0.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 2.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 31,758 USD , while 32.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.
