Neighboring areas
The district borders in a clockwise direction in the north, beginning with the districts Vulkaneifel , Cochem-Zell , Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis , Birkenfeld , Trier-Saarburg and Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm .
history
The current district of Bernkastel-Wittlich was split up into many territories before the end of the 18th century. In the wars triggered by the French Revolution , the area came under French rule. In 1815 it came under Prussian administration and in 1816 the two districts of Bernkastel and Wittlich were created , which in 1946 became part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The district of Wittlich and most of the district of Bernkastel were united in the district reform in Rhineland-Palatinate on June 7, 1969 to form today's district, with the town of Traben-Trarbach and the local communities of Burg , Enkirch , Starkenburg and Thalkleinich of the dissolved district of Zell ( Moselle) were included. The area around Rhaunen of the district of Bernkastel came to the district of Birkenfeld . On November 7, 1970, the demarcation of the district was changed. The local communities Beuren , Irmenach and Lötzbeuren of the Rhein-Hunsrück district and the local communities Breit , Büdlich , Heidenburg and Trittenheim of the district of Trier-Saarburg were newly added to the district, while the local communities Spangdahlem , Gransdorf , Oberkail , Seinsfeld and Steinborn in the district of Bitburg- Prüm changed.
On January 1, 2012, the local community of Trittenheim moved back to the Trier-Saarburg district.
The district has been part of the Trier Region Initiative (IRT) since 1994 , in which regional public institutions, administrations, universities, companies, banks and committed individuals aim to make the region an economically attractive, culturally significant and ecologically intact area with a high life - and to secure recreational value, work together as partners.
On May 25, 2009, the district received the title “ Place of Diversity ” awarded by the federal government .

badges and flags
The district of Bernkastel-Wittlich has a coat of arms and a hoisted flag .
Blazon : “Under a silver shield head with a continuous red cross, a curved, ascending tip made of red and silver; on the right a red crab in gold, on the left two upright silver keys in red, the locks of which are half-stacked. " | |
Foundation of the coat of arms: The cross stands for the Archdiocese of Trier , which ruled most of the district area. The two keys are taken from the coat of arms of the city of Wittlich . The cancer stands for Cardinal Nikolaus von Kues , real name Cryfftz (= cancer) and the red and silver chess for the county of Sponheim , to which the town of Traben-Trarbach belonged. The coat of arms was approved on December 21, 1971. |
traffic
The main line Koblenz – Trier , which was opened by the Prussian State Railway in 1879, does not follow the loops of the valley in the district, but rather leads in a fairly straight line at some distance. Only the branch line (Bullay–) Pünderich – Traben – Trarbach, built in 1883, lies on the banks of the Moselle.
In the same year, the then district town of Bernkastel-Kues received a connection from the main line at Wengerohr station - today Wittlich Hbf. In 1885 a branch line followed to the city of Wittlich, which was extended in 1909/1910 to the neighboring district of Daun. A branch line from Simmern to Morbach has operated on the Hunsrückhöhe since 1902 and on to Hermeskeil in 1903.
The numerous towns and villages on the Moselle were only connected to a small railway following the bends of the valley through the Moselbahn AG in 1903–05, which stretched from Trier to Bullay. A narrow- gauge railway created by the Allgemeine Deutsche Kleinbahn-Gesellschaft in 1900 primarily for freight traffic connected Binsfeld with the Cologne - Trier line at the Philippsheim station.
The extensive rail network of 175 km in length was reduced by 134 km between 1950 and 1988:
- 1950: Philippsheim – Binsfeld 7 km (gauge: 750 mm)
- 1961: Traben-Trarbach Ost – Reil Ost – Bullay Süd 12 km
- 1962: Niederemmel-Piesport-Traben-Trarbach Ost 38 km
- 1966: Neumagen-Dhron – Niederemmel-Piesport 4 km
- 1968: Trier – Trittenheim – Neumagen-Dhron 5 km
- 1976: Simmern – Morbach – Dhronecken – Hermeskeil 32 km
- 1981: Wittlich – Manderscheid-Pantenburg – Daun 23 km
- 1985: Wittlich Hbf – Bernkastel-Kues 15 km
- 1988: Wittlich Hbf – Wittlich 4 km
It now only includes the main line with a branch line (Bullay – Traben-Trarbach), a total of 41 km.
The federal autobahns 1 (Trier – Koblenz) and 60 (Liège – Kreuz Wittlich) run through the district, the continuation of which is planned as the B 50 over the Hunsrück in the direction of the Rhine-Main area . The federal highways 50 , 53 and 327 ( Hunsrückhöhenstraße ) also run through the district.
