The men's ice hockey tournament at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang took place from February 14th to 25th - just like at the Games in Sochi - with twelve national teams. The games have been mainly in the 10,000-seater Gangneung Hockey Center (Korean: 강릉 아이스 하키 I 경기장 ) discharged. A total of seven of the 30 games were played in the Kwandong Hockey Center (Korean: 가톨릭 관동대 학교 아이스 하키 II 경기장 ), which holds 6,000 spectators. Both stadiums are located in the coastal town of Gangneung .

After the exclusion of the National Olympic Committee of Russia  , the Olympic victory was secured by the Olympic athletes from Russia , who competed under the Olympic flag . They defeated Germany 4-3 in extra time in the final . For Germany, winning the silver medal was the greatest success in the history of German ice hockey and the first medal win since the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , when the Federal Republic of Germany won the bronze medal. Defending champion Canada secured third place and thus bronze .

The twelve teams of the Olympic ice hockey tournament were divided into three groups of four teams each in the preliminary round. The three groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams in the IIHF world rankings after the 2015 World Cup according to the following key:

Group A Group B Group C
A1 (1) B1 (2) C1 (3)
A2 (6) B2 (5) C2 (4)
A3 (7) B3 (8) C3 (9)
A4 (12) B4 (11) C4 (10)

The first three teams in the world rankings formed the group heads. They were followed by the teams in ranks 4 to 6 in second position as well as 7 and 8 and the best-placed qualifier in the 2015 world rankings in third. The three remaining places determine the two remaining qualifiers and hosts South Korea. The second best placed qualifier in the 2015 world rankings was placed in Group C, the third best in Group B and South Korea as the worst placed participating team in Group A. This results in the following groupings:

Group A Group B Group C
CanadaCanada Canada (1) OlympiaOlympic Athletes from Russia Olympic athletes from Russia (2) SwedenSweden Sweden (3)
Czech RepublicCzech Republic Czech Republic (6) United StatesUnited States USA (5) FinlandFinland Finland (4)
SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (7) SlovakiaSlovakia Slovakia (8) NorwayNorway Norway (11)
Korea SouthSouth Korea South Korea (23) SloveniaSlovenia Slovenia (14) GermanyGermany Germany (13)

Within the groups, the teams initially played according to the everyone-versus-everyone mode , so that each team initially played three games. According to their results in the preliminary round - first according to the placement within the group, then according to points, goal difference, goals scored and finally according to the world ranking - the teams were then assigned to positions 1 to 12 of a newly determined seeding list. The top three in the group and the best of the three runners-up automatically qualified for the quarter-finals. The remaining eight teams played the remaining four places in the quarter-finals in a quarter-final qualification. The team in fifth place on the seeding list met the twelfth placed, the sixth placed the eleventh placed, the seventh placed the tenth placed and the eighth placed placed the ninth. The victorious playoff qualifiers then played in the quarterfinals against one of the four automatically qualified teams. The winners from it met in the semi-finals, with the winners playing the final for the gold medal and the losers the game for the bronze medal.
