The Turner County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Ashburn .

The county is located in south-central Georgia, about 120 km from the northern Florida border and has an area of ​​751 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water surface, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wilcox County , Ben Hill County , Irwin County , Tift County , Worth County, and Crisp County .

history

Turner County was formed on August 18, 1905 as the 143rd County of Georgia from parts of Dooly County, Irwin County, Wilcox County, and Worth County. It was named after Henry Gray Turner , a Confederate captain and later a member of the US Congress.

54.7% of the population identified themselves as whites, 41.6% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 2.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.7% to several ethnic groups. 3.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 34,667 USD , while 27.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
