The NBA All-Rookie Team is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) honor given since the 1962–63 NBA season to the best rookies during the regular season. Voting is conducted by the NBA head coaches; the coaches are not allowed to vote for players on their own team.[1] The All-Defensive Team is generally composed of two five-man lineups, a first and a second team, comprising a total of 10 roster spots. The players each receive two points for each first team vote and one point for each second team vote. The top five players with the highest point total make the first team with the next five making the second team. In the case of a tie at the fifth position of either team, the roster is extended. If the first team consists of six players due to a tie, the second team will still consist of five players with the potential for more extension in the event of additional ties. Ties have occurred several times, most recently in 2006 when LaMarcus Aldridge and Jorge Garbajosa tied in votes received. No respect is given to positions.

Notes

  • Before the 1971–72 season, Lew Alcindor converted to Islam and changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, which means "noble, powerful servant" in Arabic.[2]
  • Hakeem Olajuwon was born in Nigeria, but became a naturalized United States citizen in 1993.[3]
  • Patrick Ewing was born in Jamaica, but had become a naturalized United States citizen while at Georgetown.[4] He represented the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics.[5]
  • Because Tim Duncan is a United States citizen by birth, as are all natives of the U.S. Virgin Islands,[6] he is eligible to play for the U.S. internationally.[7][8]
  • Ben Gordon has a dual citizenship as he was born in England but was raised in the United States.[9]
  • Luol Deng was born in Sudan but became a naturalized British citizen in 2006.[10]
