Hesse (German Hessen ) is a French commune with 572 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Sarrebourg-Château-Salins .
geography
The municipality of Hesse is located on the Rhine-Marne Canal , about four kilometers south of Sarrebourg at an altitude between 252 and 325 m above sea level. The municipality covers 12.85 km².
history
In Hesse there was a Benedictine monastery ( hillensis monasterium ) in the Middle Ages . The village was German until 1661, then became part of France, became German again in 1871 and then French again in 1919. In the period from 1939 to 1945 it was again under German administration and then again under French administration. It is surrounded by forest areas.
