The county is located in northeast Georgia, about 25 miles to the northeast from South Carolina and has an area of ​​1,372 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Richmond County , Burke County , Emanuel County , Johnson Counties , Washington Counties , Glascock Counties , Warren Counties, and McDuffie Counties .

Jefferson County was formed on February 20, 1796 from parts of Burke County and Warren County. It was named after President Thomas Jefferson .
