List of Japanese writers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Preliminary remark

Only Japanese writers and poets are gathered in the following list. The term writer, like the term literature, is understood in a broad sense. Authors are all authors who are of Japanese origin or who primarily write lyrical or fictional texts in Japanese. Literature is any text that can be classified in one of the three classic literary genres: epic, lyric or drama (this should also generally include plays). Texts of the genre of utility texts (which also include non-fiction and academic treatises) are not classified. Historical novels, for example, are a criterion for classification, but non-fiction books on the history of Japan are not. There is no distinction between trivial literature and high canonical literature (or in Japan between mass or entertainment literature and pure literature).

Epochs of literary history

  1. Antiquity (approx. 600–794)
  2. Classical, Heian period (794–1185)
  3. Middle Ages (1185–1600)
  4. Early modern period (1600–1868)
  5. Modern (1868–1945)
  6. Contemporary literature (1945 - today)
