The Wheeler County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Alamo .

The county is located in central southeast Georgia and has an area of 777 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Montgomery County , Jeff Davis County , Telfair County , Dodge County , Laurens County, and Treutlen Counties .
history
Wheeler County was formed on August 14, 1912 as the 146th County of Georgia from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after Joseph Wheeler , a Confederate cavalry general and later officer in the US Army.

According to the 2010 census, the then 7,421 inhabitants were distributed over 2,152 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.54 people per household. There are a total of 2625 households.
70.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.05 persons. Children under the age of 18 lived in 34.2% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 28.8% of all households.
21.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 31.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 61.7% of the population were male and 38.3% were female.
61.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 35.2% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.2% as Asian Americans . 2.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.8% to several ethnic groups. 4.8% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
The average annual income per household was 27,779 USD , while 27.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.
