The Lee County is a county in the US state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Leesburg .

geography

The county is located in central southwest Georgia, about 90 km to the west from Alabama and about 110 km to the south from the northern border of Florida . It has an area of ​​938 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Crisp County , Worth County , Dougherty County , Terrell County and Sumter County .

The county is part of the Albany metropolitan area .

history

Richard Henry Lee

Lee County was formed as Original County on June 9, 1825. It was named, like Leesburg, after Richard Henry Lee , who had proposed in the continental Congress that the new colonies in the south should be free and independent.

The first county administration in the courthouse was in Starkville until it was totally destroyed by fire in 1856. Thereafter, Leesburg became the county seat. But this too burned down completely in 1872.
