List of pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic
The list of pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic contains the most important pilgrimage sites , pilgrimage sites and pilgrimage churches in the ecclesiastical provinces of Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic .
After Kučera there are around 450 Catholic pilgrimage sites. The places of pilgrimage in the diocese of Leitmeritz are compiled in a Czech list. Pilgrimage sites in Moravia and Silesia, see below.
In the Czech Republic, pilgrimage has its roots in the early Middle Ages and there are many places of pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a meeting with the community of believers on a common path (procession) and always leads to holy places, symbolic places or places associated with miraculous events. The reasons for making a pilgrimage can be very different, e.g. B. Showing repentance (asking for forgiveness of sins), asking or thanking for special events (for example, for a healing). Here pilgrimage sites are described where there are reasons for pilgrimages on one (or more) days of the year, when the churches or chapels are open for liturgical celebrations.
The tradition of pilgrimage sites can be very different:
- Places where people later canonized died or were killed, e.g. B. Tetin near Beraun - Church of the Holy Sepulcher (10th century) or Stara Boleslav, the place of the murder of St. Wenceslas ,
- Places where people canonized later worked, e.g. B. St. Cyril and Methodius of the Eastern Church in the Moravian pilgrimage site Velehrad ,
- Many places commemorate St. Johann Nepomuk , who kept Queen Sophie of Bavaria's confessional secret ,
- Maria-Ratschitz is the oldest place of pilgrimage in Bohemia (built in 1275 by the Ossegg monastery)
- Brno-Tuřany is the oldest place of pilgrimage in Moravia
- Most pilgrimage sites are Marian pilgrimage sites that are visited during the various Marian feasts, e.g. B.
- Annunciation (March 25)
- Visitation of the Virgin Mary (July 2nd)
- Maria Schnee (August 5th)
- Assumption of Mary (August 15)
- Birth of Mary (September 8th)
- Name of Mary (September 12th)
- Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15)
- Maria Loreto or Loretto (House of the Mother of God, in which Mary was born and is said to have lived)
- Maria-Hilf or the Helpful Virgin (protector of life)
- Many pilgrimage churches are surrounded by a so-called ambit complex , which is a covered walkway (Latin ambitus ) - similar to a cloister - which is used for processions and in which there are several chapels (e.g. in Svatá Hora Příbram , Bohosudov or Mariánské Radčice).
During the Josephine reforms from 1784 to 1819, many monasteries were closed and pilgrimages were banned. This was followed by a strong resurgence of pilgrimages and adherence to this custom until 1945 ( expulsion of the Germans ) and 1950.
As part of " Aktion K " (Akce K) against the Catholic Church, many priests and nuns were arrested, interned or taken to labor camps in 1950. Many churches and monasteries were closed from 1950 to 1990 and fell into disrepair, but were restored or rebuilt after 1990. The pilgrimage tradition was resumed at some pilgrimage sites. In Moravia , people's faith is more pronounced than in Bohemia .
For many visitors, the monasteries, churches or chapels are also of particular art-historical value. Sometimes a national cultural monument or even a world cultural heritage .
