history

Founded in 1886 by George Westinghouse to manufacture electric lighting, Westinghouse Electric Company was headquartered in Monroeville , Pennsylvania . Westinghouse had previously founded the Westinghouse Air Brake Company ( WABCO ). Westinghouse Electric received its first patent for AC power transmission. It was a pioneer in the field of long-distance and high-voltage transmission of electrical energy (commonly known as electrical "electricity"). In addition to George Westinghouse, William Stanley , Nikola Tesla and Oliver B. Shallenberger also worked for the company .

The Pittsburgh subsidiary Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company manufactured automobiles between 1901 and 1907 .

Westinghouse was General Electric's rival at the time . Around 1890, a " current war " over the use of direct voltage or alternating voltage was waged between the two competitors . Westinghouse prevailed with its AC voltage system in the USA. During the “Roaring Twenties” Westinghouse did brilliant business as an electronics company. However, this led to Westinghouse going down in history as the company whose shares fell the most during the stock market crash on October 29, 1929 ( Black Tuesday ).

The company developed into a group that covered practically the entire range of electrical and electrotechnical products. In 1945 it was renamed Westinghouse Electric Corporation .

In the 1950s, Westinghouse developed a concept for a nuclear power plant with a pressurized water reactor .

In 1995, Westinghouse Electric Corporation took over CBS and decided to restructure it into a pure media company and renamed itself in 1997 to CBS Corporation . The original core businesses were gradually sold.

In 1998, CBS founded the Westinghouse Licensing Corporation to continue using the “Westinghouse” brand .

CBS Corporation was acquired in 1999 by Viacom, a previous subsidiary of the original CBS. Viacom thus took over the original CBS. This meant the end of the former "Westinghouse Corporation". Since Viacom split up in 2005 into a “new” Viacom and the CBS Corporation, the former Viacom being renamed CBS Corporation, the CBS Corporation is the legal successor to the original Viacom.

Westinghouse Markette

The company manufactured electric cars between 1967 and 1968 . The only model was called the Westinghouse Markette . The vehicle was 294 cm long. Sales remained low.
