The 1976 Academy Awards took place on March 29, 1976 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles . It was the 48th Annual Academy Awards . In the year of the award, films from the previous year are always recognized, in this case the films from 1975. Diana Ross was the first singer in this event to write her Oscar-nominated song Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) from the film Mahogany was broadcast live via satellite; she sang the song in the Netherlands while walking the streets of Amsterdam .
