List of well-known personalities at the University of Erfurt
This list contains well-known personalities who studied or worked or work at the University of Erfurt .
The University of Erfurt with around 5,500 students is one of the smallest universities in Germany. Its history goes back to 1379. At that time, the antipope Clement VII in Avignon approved the establishment of a university in Erfurt. It was not until 1389 that Pope Urban VI approved . the establishment of a university, so that the third German university was founded in Erfurt in 1392 after Heidelberg and Cologne. Teaching continued for 400 years until 1816. In 1815 Erfurt had become Prussian and the Prussians decided to close the university. It was only re-established in 1994 by the Thuringian state government and began teaching in 1999. The new university with its humanities profile sees itself as a continuation of the tradition of the old university.
The university was founded in 1390 by the Archbishop of Mainz, Adolf I of Nassau .
