The final took place in the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan .

The UEFA Champions League 2015/16 was 24 . Playing time of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this designation and the 61 . all in all. 78 clubs from 53 national associations took part in the competition. Only Liechtenstein did not provide a representative, as the local football association does not hold its own championship.

The season began with the first qualifying round on June 30, 2015 and ended with the final on May 28, 2016 at Milan's Giuseppe Meazza Stadium , home of AC Milan and Inter Milan . This was the fourth time that Milan hosted the final. After 2012 , 2008 , 2005 , 2001 and 1996, it was the sixth time that no winner had been determined within 120 minutes and a penalty shoot-out had to bring the decision. The winner, Real Madrid , qualified for the 2016 UEFA Super Cup and the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup .

qualification

A total of 32 teams took part in the Champions League. 22 of them had qualified directly through championships or placements in the respective national leagues. Another 56 teams took part in the qualification.

The division into the individual qualifying rounds was based on the 2014 UEFA five-year ranking. As of this season, last year's UEFA Europa League winner has qualified for at least the play-off round. Since the defending champions FC Barcelona in 2014/15 had already qualified for the Champions League through their national league, the 2014/15 Europa League winners moved from the play-offs to the group stage.

As Valencia CF had won the playoffs, this year was the first time a country with five teams was represented in the group stage.

3rd qualifying round

At the drawing there were two separate pots: national champions were drawn only against other national champions, whereas “pursuers”, i.e. clubs placed second, third or fourth, could only be drawn against other “pursuers”. Losing teams moved to the play-offs of the UEFA Europa League .

Play-offs

The fourth and final qualifying round was called " play-offs " for better marketing opportunities . From this round onwards, all games were marketed centrally by UEFA in order to generate greater media attention and thus increased advertising income. Losing teams competed in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League group stage . The draw took place on August 7, 2015.

The first legs took place on August 18 and 19, the second legs on August 25 and 26, 2015.

Group stage

For the first time, the qualified clubs were not only put into the lottery pots by the club coefficient . The defending champion and the champions of the seven best associations in the UEFA five-year standings came into the first pot. As before, the club coefficient decided on the allocation of pots 2, 3 and 4.

Since the defending champions FC Barcelona also became Spanish champions, PSV Eindhoven moved up as champions of the eighth best association in pot 1. Actually, PSV would have been in the third pot with a club coefficient of 58.195. Real Madrid, on the other hand, the team with the highest club coefficient of 171.999, was only in Pot 2.

The draw took place on August 27, 2015 at 5:45 p.m. (CEST) in Monaco.

32 teams from 17 national associations took part in the group stage. 22 teams were directly qualified, plus ten clubs (five each via the champions path and the placement path) from the qualifying rounds. Contrary to an earlier rule, five clubs from the same country are in the group stage of the Champions League for the first time: FC Barcelona, ​​Real Madrid, Valencia FC, Sevilla FC and Atlético Madrid. This is due to the fact that Sevilla FC did not qualify via the four starting positions in the Spanish league, but as the winner of the 2015 Europa League .

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the round of 16, the group third played in the round of 32 of the UEFA Europa League , the group fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

Round of 16

For the round of 16 eight pairings each of a group runner-up and a group winner were drawn, with the group winners initially playing the first leg away. Teams from a national association and previous opponents in the group stage were not allowed to be drawn against each other. Encounters between Russian and Ukrainian teams were also excluded. The draw took place on December 14, 2015 in Nyon. The first legs took place on February 16, 17, 23 and 24, 2016, and the second legs on March 8, 9, and March 15 and 16, 2016.
