The Walton County is a county in the state of Georgia to the United States . The county seat is Monroe .

The county is located in north-central Georgia and covers an area of ​​855 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water surface, and is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Oconee County , Morgan County , Newton County , Rockdale County , Gwinnett County, and Barrow County .

The county is part of the metropolitan area of ​​Atlanta .

history

Walton County was formed in 1818 as the 46th County of Georgia. It was named after George Walton , a signer of the Declaration of Independence and later Governor of Georgia and US Senator.
