10,000 meter run

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 10,000 meter run is a running discipline in athletics - the second longest distance of three Olympic long-distance disciplines . There are 25 stadium laps to run; the start occurs from the start involute at the finish line.

The 10,000-meter run is part of the German championships held in the summer , but - like some other disciplines - it is currently not held as part of the central competitions, but held separately in terms of location and time from the main location and German championships in the 10,000-meter run designated.

The fastest men achieve times of 27 minutes, which corresponds to 6.2 m / s or 22 km / h.

The fastest women achieve times of 30 minutes, which corresponds to 5.6 m / s or 20 km / h.

At the Olympic Games , the 10,000-meter run has been part of the program for men since 1912 and for women since 1988 .

history

In the early days of modern athletics, the UK held races over 6 miles (9656 meters) or 10 miles (16,094 meters). The first registered 10,000 meter best time comes from the year 1847 and was determined as the interim time of a 10 mile run.

The first long-distance run was a 5-mile run (8047 meters) at the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games , which was also held at the 1908 Olympic Games . Since 1912 men have run the 10,000 meters as well as the 5000 meters at the Olympic Games.

In Germany, until the First World War, neither the 5000 nor the 10,000 meter run was widespread, instead the German Mile was run with a length of 7500 meters (last German record: 22: 43.2 min in 1939 by Max Syring ) . The 5000-meter run was part of the program of the German championships for the first time on 23/24. August 1919.

The first long distance women's races were held in Great Britain in 1953 over a length of 3000 meters. The 10,000-meter course has been held for women at World Championships since 1987 and at the Olympic Games since 1988 .

The 10,000-meter runs have been shaped by the training methods of the dominant runners since the 1920s: The Finn Paavo Nurmi ran long distances twice a day, on skis in winter, supplemented by repetitive runs over short distances. The Swede Gunder Hägg invented the driving game (fartlek) in the 1940s , which consisted of cross-country runs at changing speeds. He set world records in the 1,500-meter run and in the 5,000-meter run . Emil Zátopek was successful with his interval method at the end of the 1940s / beginning of the 1950s. B. ran 60 times 400 meters. In the 1960s, endurance training began to establish itself on the long-distance after Murray Halberg ( New Zealand ) surprisingly won the 5000-meter run at the 1960 Olympic Games and Ron Clarke ( Australia ) the 10,000-meter world record from 1963 to 1965 by 39 seconds improved.
