The Archdiocese of New York ( Latin Archidioecesis Neo-Eboracensis , English Archdiocese of New York ) located in the USA is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its seat in New York City .
history
The Archdiocese of New York was separated from the Archdiocese of Baltimore on April 8, 1808 and raised to an independent diocese, which also belonged to the newly founded ecclesiastical province of Baltimore. On April 23, 1847 there were even areas on which the dioceses of Buffalo and Albany emerged. After it had been raised to an archbishopric and metropolitan seat on July 19, 1850, the diocese of Brooklyn was established on its territory on July 29, 1853 and the diocese of Newark , which was in another area of its diocese, which it together with the diocese of Philadelphia until 1937 also belonged to the ecclesiastical province of New York. In 1900 there were already 1,000,000 Catholics in 259 parishes with 449 diocesan priests and 227 religious priests . On March 21, 1929, there was again an area for the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture of Bahama .
The bishops of the Archdiocese of New York have traditionally been cardinals since 1911 . Already John McCloskey was Cardinal since 1875, but his successor was Michael Corrigan not admitted to the College of Cardinals. The ecclesiastical province includes the suffragan dioceses of Albany , Brooklyn , Buffalo , Ogdensburg , Rochester , Rockville Center and Syracuse . The archbishop is currently assisted by two auxiliary bishops for his own diocese .
territory
The archbishopric includes the areas of Bronx , Dutchess County , Manhattan , Orange County , Putnam County , Rockland County , Staten Island , Sullivan County , Ulster County, and Westchester County . As one of the few dioceses (besides Rome , Essen and Warsaw ) it does not include the entire (present-day) city after which it is named; the rest of which forms the diocese of Brooklyn .
