First in the 2004/05 season of the Bundesliga and thus German men's championship was FC Bayern Munich , which also won the DFB Cup and thus the double . The season started on August 6, 2004 with Werder Bremen's game against FC Schalke 04 . Shortly before the scheduled kick-off of the game, the floodlights failed due to a defective sleeve , which is why the game could only start more than an hour late. Werder Bremen won the game 1-0. The season ended on May 21, 2005.

Season overview

At the beginning of the season, Aílton and Mladen Krstajić (both Werder Bremen) and Marcelo Bordon (VfB Stuttgart) moved to FC Schalke 04 . The Bayern Munich committed champion Lúcio from Bayer 04 Leverkusen .

In the end, FC Bayern won their 19th championship. For a long time there had been a duel between Munich and Schalke 04. Ralf Rangnick had led the Gelsenkirchen team from 15th to 2nd place as the successor to the dismissed Jupp Heynckes and Schalke took the lead on matchday 25 after beating Bayern Munich, but Bayern secured themselves after nine consecutive victories under their new coach Felix Magath ultimately won the title with a 14 point lead over Schalke 04. In an exciting finish, Werder Bremen secured third place on the last match day and thus participation in the qualification for the Champions League ahead of Hertha BSC and VfB Stuttgart . Novelty: For the first time, the master and runner-up also contested the cup final. Bayern won this 2-1.

In addition to a sporting low and economic difficulties, Borussia Dortmund experienced the fall of President Gerd Niebaum and Manager Michael Meier . All three newcomers could keep the class. With Hansa Rostock , the only East German club was relegated to the Bundesliga after ten years. Since both finalists of the DFB Cup had qualified for the Champions League, Bayer 04 Leverkusen moved up to sixth place in the UEFA Cup .

11,560,974 spectators (average 37,781) visited the stadiums.
