The Gailtal Straße (B 111) - in Tyrol Gailtalstraße - is a state road in Austria . It has a length of 116 km and leads upstream in the Gailtal and then over the Kartitscher saddle to the Drau in the Austrian part of the Pustertal . It begins in Carinthia on Kärntner Straße (B 83) in Gailitz near Arnoldstein and ends in East Tyrol in Tassenbach an der Drau.

history

The Gailthaler Reichsstraße led from Arnoldstein via Kötschach to Oberdrauburg . Due to its high strategic importance, Gailbergstrasse was expanded into a Reichsstrasse in the years 1893–1898 at the expense of the Austro-Hungarian Empire . The section west of Kötschach, the Lessachtaler Concurrenzstraße (through the Lesachtal ), was expanded into a passable road from 1895, also with financial support from the Reich government.

During the First World War , the Carnic Alps became a theater of war in the mountain war of 1915–1918 .

The Gailtaler Straße between Arnoldstein, Kötschach and Oberdrauburg was taken over as a federal road in 1921. Until 1938 Gailtaler Strasse was designated as B 64, after the "Anschluss" of Austria , this road was converted into a first-order road on April 1, 1940 as part of the standardization of the road system and designated LIO 4. From April 1, 1948, the Gailtal Straße to Kötschach belonged again to the network of federal highways in Austria .

The western section of the Gailtal Straße between Kötschach and Tyrol has been part of the network of federal highways in Austria since January 1st, 1950. Since the Federal Roads Transmission Act of 2002 came into force, the road has been a state road, even if it is still often referred to as a federal road in the media and popularly.

During a storm in autumn 2018 , the road between Maria Luggau and St. Lorenzen slipped over a length of around 100 meters. A temporary bypass road was built there until the repair work was completed. The opening of the road, originally planned for December 9, 2019, had to be postponed until further notice due to the onset of frosty weather and the safety measures that became necessary.  B111  Like the other former federal highways, Gailtal Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
