In order to keep fit after his suspension, Boateng took part in training at his ex-club AC Milan from October 2015 and was also used there in a test match at the beginning of November. After Boateng and FC Schalke 04 had agreed to terminate the contract at the end of the year, AC Milan provided him with a contract until the end of the 2015/16 season . Hrubesch also nominated him for the provisional squad for the 2009 European Under-21 Championship in Sweden. However, Boateng had to cancel in the course of preparation due to an injury.

Ghana

On June 24, 2009, Boateng announced that he wanted to play for the Ghanaian national soccer team with immediate effect, as he saw no prospects for himself in the German team . While Boateng was waiting for FIFA's approval , Ghana's football association nominated him for the 2010 Africa Cup with reservations . Participation was not possible due to the pending FIFA decision. On May 7, 2010 Boateng was appointed to the preliminary World Cup squad of Ghana. Association vice-president Fred Pappoe assumed a decision by FIFA before the World Cup. This came on time and so Boateng was appointed to the final World Cup squad in Ghana on May 30, 2010 . On June 5, 2010, he played his first international match for Ghana against Latvia .

Ghana was the only African team to survive the group stage despite the defeat against Germany. On June 26, 2010 Boateng scored his first international goal in the round of 16 against the USA . The game ended 2-1 after extra time and Ghana celebrated the greatest success in the association's history when they reached the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, the team was eliminated from Uruguay 2-4 on penalties. Boateng was nominated for Africa's Footballer of the Year award on November 7, 2010 . However, he could not win the election, but he was elected in Africa's Eleven of 2010. In 2011 he was also included in the team of the year.

On November 4, 2011, Boateng declared due to the high physical strain caused by the additional commitment that he did not want to appear for Ghana for the time being. But for the World Cup qualifier against Zambia on September 6, 2013, he returned to the squad. In the playoff against Egypt, Boateng was finally able to qualify for the 2014 World Cup with Ghana . On May 13, 2014, he was appointed to the squad for the tournament.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Boateng began his first game against the USA on the bench. After being substituted on, the Africans were able to level their deficit at times. Due to a late goal, however, the game was lost 2-1. In the second group game against Germany Boateng was in the starting line-up and played again, like four years ago, against his half-brother Jérôme. After a defensive first half, he was replaced at the beginning of the second half. The game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Shortly before the playoff against Portugal , Boateng was suspended until further notice after an argument with his coach James Kwesi Appiah . His teammate Sulley Muntari had a similar experience . Boateng did not consider the suspension, which is said to have been transmitted by "a white slip of paper under the door", to be understandable. He has denied the allegations made against him. He reserves the right to withdraw from the national team of Ghana. Ghana lost the game against the Portuguese 2-1. With a win, the Africans would have qualified for the round of 16.

Style of play

Boateng is a two-footed, versatile midfielder. In his first professional years he mostly acted in the external positions; later he moved to central midfield. There he can be used both as an offensive “ tens ” and as a defensive “ six ”. At FC Schalke, Boateng took over the position of center forward at times when Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was out due to injury .

Boateng's style of play is characterized by his technical strength. For example, his former trainer Jürgen Klopp said that Boateng had a hundred ways of receiving a ball and had a dozen options for passing an opponent. Thanks to his technical strength and game overview, Boateng is able to put his teammates in the limelight with targeted passes. In addition, he has exceptionally good shooting technique and shooting power.

In contrast to his brother, who is considered shy, Boateng is also known for his tough gait on the field, which was demonstrated , for example, in the rough foul play against Michael Ballack in the FA Cup final on May 15, 2010. It will charisma and leadership skills attributed.
