List of DEFA films

The list of DEFA films contains a list of all film productions made by the DEFA studio for feature films, as well as co-productions with television in the GDR or with production companies from other - mostly socialist - countries. What they all have in common is that the films were shown in the GDR cinema. If stated, the date of the premiere was taken from the DEFA Foundation's website .

There are no pure television films or series that were produced by DEFA on behalf of the German Television Broadcasting Corporation (DFF). Furthermore, the satirical short films, the so-called " spiny animals ", are missing from this list .

The film production companies in East Germany

Contrary to popular belief, there were a number of film studios and producers in the GDR . These were among others:

  • companies organized under private law (e.g. Studio H&S )
  • Studios at institutions and ministries (e.g. the film studio of the Central Labor Research Institute , film studio of the NVA )
  • Studios that belonged to companies (for example the film studio of the Deutsche Reichsbahn , film studio "aktuell" of SDAG Wismut ) and
  • Studios of freelance filmmakers ( e.g. Lustermann film studio in Erfurt)

In addition, there were numerous amateur and semi-professional film studios that were run by companies and mass organizations and often had full-time managers and employees or whose employees were released from other work obligations in their companies. Another institution that produced its own films was the Potsdam University of Film and Television (HFF). The main sponsors of film production in the GDR - and thus also the largest producers - were DEFA , which was founded in 1946 as Deutsche Film AG , and television in the GDR .

Legend

  • Year : indicates the year the film was completed; this can differ from the year of the premiere if, for example, the film was (temporarily) banned; the first film title of a new year is highlighted in color
  • Title : gives the title of the film, in the case of various production countries, the performance titles of all countries are given, with the performance title of the GDR coming first
  • Director : names the director or directors of the film
  • Date of the premiere : states the date of the premiere
  • Other : names special features of the film, for example whether it is a black and white film or by which production group (HG) or artistic working group (KAG) the film was made
