Lümanda (German Lümmada ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 195 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016).

It is located 26 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Kuressaare . The place was first mentioned in 1522. In the village there is a cultural center, a library, a post office and a primary school. The school building dates from 1896.

church

The exterior of the Orthodox “Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord ” is strongly reminiscent of the Evangelical Lutheran churches on the island. The restrained and simply designed church was built in 1867. Its two towers are striking, symbolizing the two natures of Christ (God and man). The high, square bell tower above the west entrance is emphasized architecturally. For the iconostasis , works by various painters were collected, including works by the Finnish icon painter Marietta Hannula .

The parish is now subordinate to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church (EAÕK). The church also has a small cemetery.

The building of the former Orthodox parish school with its jacket chimney stands directly next to the church. It was built in 1875. Since 1997 there has been a restaurant with traditional Estonian cuisine in the restored house.
