With their 13th season which started Live - dance show Let's Dance on February 21, 2020 a new round and crowned in the final on May 22, a new "Dancing Star".
The show
Innovations
After his victory in the Great Professional Challenge 2019 at the side of Ekaterina Leonova last year , Massimo Sinató redeemed the award in the introductory show to be able to choose his future dance partner from the field of participants and announced at the beginning of the first "partnering round", on whom his choice fell. The same right would have been granted to series winner Leonova, who surprisingly no longer takes part in the competition. Neither the broadcaster nor the dancer gave details of the reasons. The dance styles learned at the beginning were not refined in the subsequent tournament round, but changed between the couples.
procedure
Due to the increasing spread of the coronavirus in spring 2020, precautionary measures were taken by production at the end of February and hygiene regulations were issued in order to keep the risk of infection for participants, moderators, jury, audience and employees as low as possible. These included, in particular, the recommendation to avoid excessive and frequent body contact such as hugs during the live shows. Although the directive of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia only prohibited major events with over 1000 people, the broadcaster for its part refrained from show audiences from March 13th. While family members and friends of the participating protagonists were initially exempt from this regulation, the decision shows took place from March 20th without any studio spectators. These protective measures were also tightened to the effect that the dancing couples sat separately from one another on the empty guest stands, which a week later were redesigned like stands and furnished with sofas. From then on, the final decisions were announced there. The actual lounge was used by the jury for the purpose of awarding points. From April 17th, the desks were separated by plexiglass walls.
Since the participants were to remain largely isolated from each other, the rehearsals for the gender-separated battle were also canceled after the first day of training (March 14th). While the group presentations themselves had to be canceled, the team performance could still be evaluated by assessing the recordings of the first overall run. The women danced to the Allegro moderato from the ballet Swan Lake by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky , the men convinced with a performance in the style of Michael Jackson .
Nevertheless, team dances did not have to be completely dispensed with, as long as they could be adapted to the appropriate framework conditions. In their specially created choreographies, the jurors made sure that the couples dance to themselves with a certain distance and did not involve themselves in it - with the exception of Motsi Mabuse, who together with her husband Evgenij Voznyuk the presentation of their protégés Luca Hänni and Moritz accompanied Hans. Jorge González opened the performance by Ilka Bessin, Loiza Lamers and Tijan Njie, while Joachim Llambi supported his team around Laura Müller, Lili Paul-Roncalli and Martin Klempnow together with Roberto Albanese during training, which took place before the Easter break. For the Discofox marathon on April 24th, the large hall parquet was divided into smaller individual areas with barrier tapes in order to be able to maintain the required safety distance here as well. Only the Trio Dances planned for the quarter-finals on May 8th had to give way to an alternative. For this reason, Challenge Dances were designed in which the pure pair constellations are retained. A prop should be built into the choreography and presented as an additional element, which presents the dancers with another creative and sometimes technically difficult task.
In addition, the level of difficulty of the impro-dances traditionally held in the semi-finals has been increased again. After the admission of a dance, the dance couple change clothes separately from each other, while only the professional is allowed to listen to the music selection. Then there is half a minute to briefly exchange ideas about possible figure combinations and to rehearse step sequences before the conception has to be brought onto the floor spontaneously. As a requirement for the jury dances in the final, lifting figures have been deleted from now on, while basic steps should be shown for at least 30 seconds.
Failures
Because his father-in-law was hospitalized, John Kelly skipped the fourth live show and shortly afterwards decided to leave the competition for good in view of the stressful situation for the family in order to be able to provide his wife with the necessary support. This step enabled Loiza Lamers , who had previously resigned, to return to the dance floor. On March 27, professional dancer Christian Polanc canceled his participation in the fifth program a few hours beforehand due to suspicion of a COVID-19 infection, which was later not confirmed. Robert Beitsch stepped in for him at short notice as a dance partner for Laura Müller .
Special program
On Good Friday, Let's Dance - The Jurors' Most Beautiful Moments was another special, in which the judges, together with guests and commentators from the ranks of professional dancers and former participants, reviewed their personal highlights and memorable moments from previous seasons - all in one Quiz were able to prove their memory skills. In addition, the viewers were given some backstage insights, for example into the training for the show openings with the choreographers Gerald van Windt and Sarah Hammerschmidt or the live tour 2019, which will also take place in the same form in autumn 2020. 21 dates are planned in 16 different cities between November 3rd and December 2nd. The continuation of the offshoot Llambis Tanzduell , on the other hand, found its place as a six-part series outside of the actual broadcast cycle in the Sunday evening program between April 19 and May 24.
One week after the season finale, on May 28, the ranking of Let's Dance - The most beautiful dances of all time looked back at the dance highlights of various couples, before Let's Dance - The Great Professional Challenge was broadcast live for the second time the next day .
