The 1992 Winter Olympics took place in Albertville , France . The Olympic ice hockey tournament was held from February 8 to 23. Twelve teams took part in this tournament. The venue for all encounters was the Palais de Glaces Méribel . The Olympic champion was the United Team , which defeated Canada 3-1 in the first Olympic ice hockey final since 1920 . It was the eighth Olympic victory for the Soviet / United Team and the first Olympic medal for Canada since 1968.
Attendees
In addition to the host France, the eight teams of the A group of the 1991 Ice Hockey World Championship and the two best teams of the B group were eligible to participate . The last place was played in a qualification between the B group fourth (France as B group third was qualified as host) and the C group winner.
The Olympic tournament was also influenced by the political events of that time. A team whose state no longer existed took part in the tournament. During 1991, the Soviet Union disintegrated into 15 states. At first the Baltic States had separated, then in the autumn the rest of the USSR broke up into its constituent republics almost overnight, with the 12 new states amalgamating to form a loose union, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Since the new states could not set up their own Olympic teams so quickly, the planned Soviet team started at the Winter Olympics under the name "United Team" . Of course, this also applied to the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
Mode changes
The Olympic tournament brought some innovations. For the first time, professional players were allowed to play in an Olympic tournament without restrictions. In addition, the competition mode was changed again. Compared to the previous Olympic tournament, there was no more final round, but the best four teams in each group reached the quarter-finals and then played the medals and the Olympic champion in the knockout system . In addition, the fifth and sixth placed in the preliminary round, as well as the teams eliminated in the quarterfinals, played placement games.

Quarter finals
The quarter-final match between Canada and Germany turned out to be exciting. Ernst Köpf managed to equalize 3: 3 in the last third 2:24 minutes before the end. This hit also meant the final score after 60 minutes and led to a ten-minute extension that brought no more goals. For the first time in Olympic history there was a penalty shootout. The first five shooters for each team didn't make a decision either. Eric Lindros then gave Canada a 6: 5 lead with a converted penalty shot, while Peter Draisaitl brought the puck between the legs of goalkeeper Sean Burke , but the latter remained directly on the goal line. The referees decided on no goal and Canada reached the semi-finals against Czechoslovakia.
