Étain is a French commune in the Meuse department in the region of Grand Est (2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Verdun and is the capital of the canton of Étain . Étain has 3580 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) on almost 20 km². The inhabitants of the place call themselves Stainois .

geography

The municipality of Étain is located on the upper Orne , 20 kilometers northeast of Verdun . To the east of the town is the Étain-Rouvres military airfield . Etain train station is on the Saint-Hilaire-au-Temple-Hagondange railway line .

history

St. Martin Church

The first documentary mention as Villa de Stain comes from the year 707. At that time Étain was the center of a ban with the villages of Longeau, Haraigne, Herméville and Warcq.

In 1409 there is evidence of an important cloth fair in Étain.

Already before 1790 there was a hospital and a monastery of the Capuchins . The city was fortified with a wall and had four city gates.
