State :

The Budapest B10 is a country road B in Lower Austria and Burgenland and former federal highway . It leads from the Vienna state border via Schwechat , Schwadorf , Bruck an der Leitha and Parndorf to the Hungarian border near Nickelsdorf . There it is continued as Hungarian main road 1 ( 1-es föut ) to Budapest.

history

Until 1947, all traffic between Vienna and Budapest ran via Hainburg and therefore also via Pressburger Strasse . Therefore this street leading through Bruck an der Leitha was called Brucker Straße until 1947 .

Origins

The Brucker Straße between Vienna and Bruck was an Austrian Reichsstraße , originally built by the city of Bruck and taken over by the state in 1838. In 1834 there were toll stations in Bruck, Wilfleinsdorf and Schwadorf, which brought in around 35,000 guilders for the state treasury. On the Hungarian side, the road between Bruck and Parndorf was classified as a state road in 1854, which was supposed to be maintained by the residents doing free work.

Old and new B10 on the Hungarian border in Nickelsdorf

The Brucker street in Lower Austria is one of the former imperial roads that were taken in 1921 as federal highways. In 1923 this main road was extended to Parndorf, where it merged into Eisenstädter Straße . The eastern section between Gattendorf and Nickelsdorf was run as the Burgenland state road from 1926. Until 1938, Brucker Strasse was known as the B 7. After the annexation of Austria , this road was divided into several 1st order country roads as part of the standardization of the road system on April 1, 1940 :

  • The LIO 70 ran from Engerau via Gattendorf and Parndorf to Eisenstadt
  • The LIO 72 ran from Vienna to Parndorf
  • The LIO 74 ran from Gattendorf via Nickelsdorf to Hegyeshalom

On March 23, 1942, the middle section between Parndorf and Gattendorf was declared a Reichsstraße again by a decree of the General Inspector for German Roads and was made part of Reichsstraße 405 . The Reichsstraße 405 ended in Kittsee in the Reichsstraße 8b , which led from Wolfsthal to the then German-Hungarian border crossing at Croatian-Jahrndorf .

Since April 1, 1948, the entire length of Budapester Strasse has been part of the network of federal highways in Austria . Budapester Strasse had become the main axis of road traffic between Vienna and Budapest because the previous Vienna - Budapest highway had been on Czechoslovak territory since 1947. The Stixneusiedl-Gallbrunn bypass was built in the 1950s. The former B10 in Stixneusiedl has been called Alte Bundesstrasse ever since . After the fall of the Iron Curtain , this federal road was extremely busy due to the extremely strong increase in traffic. Accidents happened here regularly, especially between Bruck and Schwechat, as the B10 runs almost dead straight in this section and many drivers are therefore more careless. It was replaced in this function by the construction of the Ost Autobahn (A4). Even today, accidents still happen or there are long traffic jams and / or convoys due to obstructions on the A4.

In the 1990s, the stretch between the north bridge and Simmering also belonged to Budapester Strasse. Today this section is part of Klosterneuburger Straße (B14).

In 2002 the B10 (like all former federal highways) was transferred to the state administration.

Until 2010, the section in Vienna between Etrichstrasse and the Vienna state border was a main road B and, as such, part of the B10. According to an ordinance of the municipal council of May 20, 2010, this street would now be a main street A. Currently (in March 2013) it is still signposted in Vienna (at the intersection of Etrichstrasse / Simmeringer Hauptstrasse) with street number 10.

Accidents

On August 23, 1988, between Schwadorf and Schwechat, a Hungarian coach with tourists collided with a truck train, which blocked the lane after its trailer had broken away, so that the oncoming bus slashed on the left for about 3/4 of its length in the meadow next to the road on the right leaning against a row of accompanying trees and came to stand near the trailer. 14 bus passengers (especially those in the left-hand rows of seats) died, 37 people (including the drivers of buses and trucks) were injured. Rainwater-filled ruts in the roadway favored the accident, which was triggered by a car / caravan team braking in front of the truck.

Expansion planning

A bypass around Schwadorf is being planned . The place is bothered by the noise. Many residents therefore request a bypass. However, there is neither a schedule nor a specific route for this project. In the event of the construction of a third runway at Schwechat Airport , the plan is to relocate the B10 on a straight stretch of around 4.5 km to the west around the northwest end of the third runway, which will extend the B10 by around 2 km would effect.

Renovations in 2016 and 2017

After the state road L2048 between Stixneusiedl and Gallbrunn was renovated, the B10 was also tackled in July 2016. The state of Lower Austria officially started the renovation of the road damaged by traffic at the end of June. This had partially broken through completely. From the beginning of the village in the west of Gallbrunn to the intersection with Brucker Straße in Stixneusiedl, the road was renewed in three sections - around three kilometers of the road were affected. The work was completed at the end of August. In the first section, traffic was regulated on one side with a traffic light, while the two other sections were completely closed from mid-July 2016. Traffic was diverted here. There were no costs for the community, these were borne by the state. However, the diversion caused permanent damage to the already heavily damaged Old Federal Road in Stixneusiedl.

Further sections will be renovated in 2017. In April and May, the first section between Schwadorf and the turnoff to Rauchwarth was renewed. From July 3, 2017, the area followed from the intersection to the B9 roundabout . The traffic in the direction of Vienna was diverted via the B60 and B9, the traffic in the direction of Budapest was directed to one of the two lanes, while the other lane was rehabilitated. Shortly afterwards, the renovation of Stixneusiedl to Bruck an der Leitha began . Traffic was diverted to the state roads L163 and L2047 via the villages of Sarasdorf and Wilfleinsdorf. The renovated B10 was opened at the beginning of September before school started.

B10  Like the other former federal highways, Budapester Strasse was part of the federal administration. Since April 1, 2002, it has been under state administration and continues to have the B in the number, but not the name Bundesstraße.
