Center of Velké Meziříčí

Velké Meziříčí (German Groß Meseritsch , also Groß Meseritz ) is a city in the Czech Republic with 11,645 inhabitants (January 1, 2016) . It is 425 m above sea level. M. in a valley of the Krischanauer Uplands (Křižanovská vrchovina) in the south of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands at the confluence of the Oslava and Balinka and belongs to the Okres Žďár nad Sázavou .

history

The first documentary mention dates back to 1236. The castle and the later chateau were the eponymous ancestral seat of the rich and powerful Moravian dynasty of the Mezericky, lords of Lomnitz and Meseritz, whose ancestor Demetrius von Bukov in the Brno area near Pernstein is mentioned in 1283 . With Tas von Lomnitz , chief judge of Moravia, the entire male line died out in the year 1600. Between 1676 and 1735 the counts Ugarte ruled .

Since 1408, the then associated village received city rights . The historic center of the city at the foot of the originally Gothic castle has been declared a city monument. In addition to a castle, there is also the cathedral of St. Nicholas of Myra and the originally Gothic town hall, the Lutheran high school, built in the Renaissance style, a synagogue and partly preserved castle walls. There is a 16th century Jewish cemetery nearby .

From the end of the 19th century to 1948, the castle, which now houses a museum, was owned by Franz von Harrach from the Harrach family .

In September 1909 Meseritsch was the headquarters of the maneuver management of an imperial maneuver, in which the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I , the German Emperor Wilhelm II and the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este took part and moved into quarters in the Groß Meseritsch Palace had.

On May 6, 1945 at the end of the Second World War, there was a massacre of Czech civilians in Groß Meseritsch in which 50 people died. In 2005, investigations into the massacre of the former Hitler Youth member Rudolf Malik, who lived in Germany, began in Prague .

Velké Meziříčí consists of the districts Dolní Radslavice ( Unterratzlawitz ), Hrbov ( Herbau ), Kúsky ( Kusek ), Lhotky, Mostiště ( Mostischt ), Olší nad Oslavou ( Wolschi ), Svařenov ( Swarschenow ) and Velké Mezzirke , which at the same time make up Velké Mezzirke .

Lomnitz in the Brno area; that of Meseric and that of Tasov in the Iglauer Kreis, whose gold coat of arms shows an eagle wing turning down the Saxons and a closed black flight as a jewel on a crowned helmet with black and gold covers. According to documents in the Wittingau and Vienna archives, there is a community of coats of arms with the Lords of Skuhrov in the Königgrätzer Kreis; the Lords of Krizanau in the Iglauer Kreis; Ejvan's also called Popovic in Rosic in the Brno region; the Mesic and von Raitz also in the Brno district, all based in Moravia . The lords of Kostomlat in Bohemia , not far from Nimburg, also belong to them according to their coat of arms. The crest is now the coat of arms of the city of Groß-Meseritsch.
