Homberg is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rennerod .

Geographical location

The community is located in the Westerwald between Siegen and Limburg an der Lahn on the 634  m high Homberg . About a kilometer to the west is the Breitenbachtalsperre , which dams the Breitenbach (eastern Nister tributary).

history

Homberg was first mentioned in a document on March 29, 1256 as Hoimberch above the Westerwald . The place has been part of the parish Emmerichenhain since the Middle Ages and with this the rulership of the Westerwald . The chapel, first mentioned in 1570, was only a ruin in 1645. In 1778 the community bought a house to set up a school.

Around 1500 there were six families living in the village. In 1635 the plague raged and claimed great victims. In 1848 a school was built.
