The company was founded in 1962 by Carroll Shelby and built tuning parts and tuned cars for private customers. Some of the cars made by Shelby American were the Shelby GT 350 based on the Ford Mustang and the Shelby GT 500. Shelby American also designed the legendary Shelby Cobra , an AC Ace with a Ford V8 engine.

The company was also heavily involved in racing; Shelby cars won many races on the drag racing track and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , as well as the sports car world championship for the first time for a US car in 1966 . In 1966, the same year that Shelby American helped American win the World Sports Car Championship, Shelby American also helped them win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In 1995, the company moved to Nevada and became the state's first automaker there. The model range consisted of:

  • 427 cu.in. S / C cobras
  • UK CSX1000 series frames and aluminum bodies (modern production)
  • CSX-4000 series Various manufacturers, with GRP and aluminum bodies
  • CSX-6000 series Continuation of the CSX-4000 series
  • CSX-7000 series FIA Cobra roadster with 289 cu.in.
  • CSX-8000 series 289 cu.in. road racing car
  • CSX-9000 series Cobra "Daytona" Coupe, introduced in 2009.

In 2003 the company name was changed to Carroll Shelby International, Inc. and the company was floated on the stock exchange. Shelby Automobile was founded as a branch of the new company.

On December 15, 2009, the company announced that Shelby Automobiles would be renamed Shelby American to mark the 45th anniversary of the Cobra 427 and Shelby GT 350.
