Toto Cutugno

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toto Cutugno (* 7. July 1943 in Fosdinovo as Salvatore Cutugno ) is an Italian singer , songwriter and television presenter . In the course of his career he took part in the Sanremo Festival 15 times and won it once. He celebrated his greatest successes in the 1980s. In 1990 he won with Insieme: 1992 for Italy the Eurovision Song Contest . He is also active as a songwriter for a number of successful Italian and international performers.

Career

Cutugno was born in Tuscany to a father of Sicilian descent; he grew up in La Spezia and played drums in various Italian beat groups ( Nostradamus , Cocci di Vaso or Accanimenti Terapeutici ) at a young age until he became a permanent member of the band Ghigo ei Goghi ; However, this dissolved again in 1969. He then founded the short-lived band Toto ei Tati , with which he first took part in the Un disco per l'estate competition in 1970 , albeit without success. A little later he founded a new group, Albatros , in which he was also active as a singer.

With the song Africa written by Cutugno , Albatros had a minor hit in 1975, which was particularly successful in the French version of Joe Dassin (as L'été indien ). As a result, various French artists such as Gérard Lenorman ( Voici les clés ), Dalida ( Monday Tuesday… Laissez-moi danser ), Johnny Hallyday ( Derrière l'amour ) or Hervé Vilard ( Reviens ) landed hit parades with French versions of originally Italian cutugno compositions . Cutugno wrote the hit En chantant for Michel Sardou . He provided other original compositions in France for Mireille Mathieu and Claude François .

With Volo AZ504 Albatros was able to land third place at the Sanremo Festival in 1976 . Already next year the group returned to the festival had with Gran Premio but only moderate success. In 1978 Albatros disbanded and Cutugno began his solo career. The 1978 single Donna donna mia was captured by using it as the theme song for the quiz show Scommettiamo? known from Mike Bongiorno , Cutugno followed up his debut album Voglio l'anima in 1979. In the same year Adriano Celentano achieved a number one hit with the song Soli co-written by Cutugno . Cutugno's breakthrough came with the song Solo noi , which won the Sanremo Festival in 1980 . In the same year he also took part in the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo with Francesca non lo sa , wrote the festival bar winner's song Olympic Games for Miguel Bosé and continued his collaborations with Adriano Celentano and Mike Bongiorno.

Cutugno's second album La mia musica was released in 1981. During the 1980s, the singer took part in the Sanremo Festival six times himself ( 1983 with L'italiano , 1984 with Serenata , 1986 with Azzurra malinconia , 1987 with Figli , 1988 with Emozioni and 1989 with Le mamme ), but without winning again, and made contributions for other participants, such as Luis Miguel , Fausto Leali , Peppino di Capri , Ricchi e Poveri and Franco Califano . In 1987, four songs by Cutugno were in competition, including Figli , which he sang himself ; in the same year he appeared in the entertainment program Domenica for the first time as a television presenter.

When he took part in the Sanremo Festival for the tenth time in 1990 , Cutugno and Gli amori came in second for the fifth time, behind the group Pooh . After they refused to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 , Cutugno moved up as an Italian candidate. With the self-written song Insieme: In 1992 he achieved the second Italian ESC victory in Zagreb after Gigliola Cinquetti's Non ho l'età (1964). The 1991 Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Rome, was then moderated by Cutugno and Cinquetti.

From the 1990s on, things got quieter around Cutugno. He continued to work as a television presenter, returned to Sanremo in 1995 and 1997 (without achieving notable success) and released a few new albums. In 2005 the singer achieved another second place in Sanremo in a duet with Annalisa Minetti . Between 2006 and 2007 he toured the Eastern European countries, in 2008 and 2010 further Sanremo participations followed.
