Located in the United States , the Archdiocese of Omaha ( Latin : Archidioecesis Omahensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Omaha , Nebraska .

history

The Archdiocese of Omaha found its beginnings in the Vicariate Apostolic Indian Territory East of the Rocky Mountains, from which it was separated on January 6, 1857 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Nebraska. After Idaho had already been lost in 1833, it was raised to a diocese on October 2, 1885 and as a suffragan diocese subordinated to the Archdiocese of Dubuque . Two years later, in 1887, the dioceses of Cayenne and Lincoln were separated from it, and in 1912 also the diocese of Kearney . On August 4, 1945, Omaha was elevated to an archbishopric with metropolitan headquarters.
