Montfaucon-d'Argonne is a French commune with 307 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meuse department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Verdun , the canton of Clermont-en-Argonne (until 2015: canton of Montfaucon-d'Argonne ) and the municipal association Argonne-Meuse .
geography
Montfaucon-d'Argonne is located in the southeast of the Argonne , about 21 kilometers northwest of Verdun . Montfaucon-d'Argonne is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Nantillois in the north, Septsarges in the northeast, Cuisy in the east, Malancourt in the east and southeast, Avocourt in the south, Véry in the west and southwest and Epinonville in the west and northwest.
history
On June 24, 888, West Frankish troops under Odo von Paris defeated the Vikings ( Normans ) here.
Towards the end of the First World War broke through the American Expeditionary Forces in October 1918 in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive , the German positions and took Montfaucon after a first attack in late September had failed with heavy losses.
