The 50th Eurovision Song Contest took place on May 19 and 21, 2005 in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . The winner was Elena Paparizou , who competed for Greece with the song My Number One .
The venue was the Kiev Sports Palace (Palats Sportu) in the city center. The programs were presented by the presenters Maria Efrosinina and Pawlo Schilko , who is known in Ukraine by his stage name DJ Pasha and who read his country's rating the previous year. The Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and the Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko were personally present at the final. The televoting in the final was opened by the Ukrainian-born professional boxers Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko . Wladimir Klitschko and last year's winner Ruslana also conducted interviews in the green room and awarded the trophy. In addition, President Yushchenko personally presented the winner with a Eurovision mark made of 500 grams of gold.
particularities
Ruslana was supposed to act as a moderator, but canceled on May 4th by her management. The official justification for this was that, due to a benefit event two days earlier, she was unable to concentrate sufficiently on the rehearsals. From circles of the organizer European Broadcasting Union it is said, however, that the real reason is the criticism of Ruslana's inadequate English and French language skills, which could lead to irritations when awarding points.
Ukraine took the opportunity to present itself as a modern European country by organizing the competition. During the whole week before the final, the center of Kiev was the destination of visitors from all over the world, who were offered an extensive supporting program. Participants such as journalist and Grand Prix expert Jan Feddersen said that these diverse theme parties and club appearances by the artists were the real experience of the event. In the evening, the competition was broadcast live to the Maidan Nesaleschnosti on giant screens.

The participation of the singer Gracia for Germany was controversial, as her producer David Brandes had to admit that he had pushed the track Run & Hide into the charts through targeted CD purchases. He was then excluded from the German delegation. But he had also composed the contribution of the Estonian girl group Vanilla Ninja and traveled as a member of the Swiss delegation.
The big four , however, occupied the last four places in the final and would not have qualified for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 without their special status .
This year the Barbara Dex Award , initiated by a fan site, was presented for the ninth time. The “worst” outfit of the competition is to be awarded with this price, which should not be taken very seriously. This year's winner was Martin Vucic from Macedonia.
Attendees
With 39 participating countries, the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 was numerically the largest event in this competition at the time. Bulgaria and Moldova participated in the competition for the first time. Hungary returned.
As in the previous year, there was a semi-final two days before the final, from which the top ten winners reach the final. Fourteen other countries have already qualified for the finals: the top places from last year and the Big Four of the European Broadcasting Union ( Germany , France , the United Kingdom and Spain ).
The following performers returned to the competition:
country | Interpreter | Previous year of participation |
---|---|---|
Greece | Elena Paparizou | 2001 (as a member of Antique ) |
Iceland | Selma | 1999 |
Malta | Chiara | 1998 |
Cyprus | Constantinos Christoforou | 1996 , 2002 (as a member of One ) |
Voting procedure
Since 2004, the points have been determined using the televoting process in all countries . In almost all participating countries, television viewers have also been involved in the awarding of points in the past. The song with the most votes received twelve points, and the one with the second most ten points. The songs ranked below were rated with eight points down to one point.
All 39 participating countries voted in both the semi-finals and the final. In the semifinals, only the ten countries that make it to the finals were named in an arbitrary order when naming the winners; In the final, the results of the individual votes were traditionally read out live in the respective countries. First the non-qualified countries gave their points in the order of the semi-finals, followed by the 24 qualified countries according to the starting order in the final.
Semifinals
The following 25 countries took part in the semi-finals on May 19th. The starting order was drawn on March 21st. The countries marked in green were able to qualify for the final.

"We, the people of Eurovision ..."
For the first time in the history of the ESC, the organizers tried to include other art forms in addition to music with an exhibition on the occasion of the anniversary. “We, the people of Eurovision…” showed photographs and sculptures in the Sportpalast from May 18th to 21st. Each participating country could choose one artist for both categories. For Germany, the Lüdenscheid photographer Dirk Jung exhibited a photograph of the singer Gracia Baur . Germany did not submit a sculpture.
Controversy about the Austrian candidate and Lebanon's participation
Alf Poier represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003 . With his title Because man counts he reached the 6th place, the best result for Austria since 1989. His song and his stage show were a parody of the pop business.
In February 2005 he wanted to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for a second time, but in the Austrian decision-making show ( song.null.fünf ) he came second with the song Good Old Europe Is Dying , 4 points behind. However, he was a victim of a rating system that weighted the votes unequally: The organizer ORF let the viewers vote by phone and separately by SMS . Each federal state had the same number of points to award - whether Burgenland or Vienna, which is six times as large . The total voting via SMS only counted as much as a single “tenth” federal state. This unequal weighting brought Poier to second place with around 106,000 votes cast, behind the band Global Kryner , which received only around 60,000 votes, but in contrast to Poier was mainly supported by landline callers from Vorarlberg and Burgenland with a higher voting weight.
The originally planned direct evaluation was only replaced by the indirect mode described a few days before the vote; some interested people understood this as a targeted maneuver to “prevent” the artistically bulky and decidedly non-folkloric poier.
Alf Poier's statement:
- "Anyone who demands justice in this world is an idiot!"
- "Anyone who demands understanding in this world is insane!"
- "I thank you all in the name of the truth!"
- "Alf Poier 2nd place with 106,000 votes"
- "Global Kryner 1st place with 60,000 votes"
- "Your deranged idiot Alf Poier"
Originally, Lebanon was also supposed to take part. Télé Liban had already chosen singer Aline Lahoud and the song Quand tout s'enfuit as the country's contribution. However, the broadcaster canceled participation on March 18, 2005 . Télé Liban justified his step with the fact that the legal situation of the Lebanese state would make a transfer of the Israeli contribution impossible. However, the ESC regulations require that the entire program be broadcast.
Remarks
