The list of mountains in the Palatinate Forest contains a selection of mountains that are located in the Rhineland-Palatinate natural area Palatinate Forest (maximum 672.6  m above sea  level ).

The mountain range is a red sandstone packet of about 500 meters in thickness is formed, which by a complex relief by deep and narrow V-shaped valleys , various mountain shapes and dense forest cover is characterized. Since its rock layers were inclined during the formation of the Upper Rhine Rift and sink from east to west, the highest peaks are more than 600  m above sea level. NHN in the Haardt , a mountain range that separates the Palatinate Forest in the east from the Rhine plain. Its central part consists of the Frankenweide high plateau further to the west , in which there are also several mountains that exceed the six hundred meter mark. In contrast, the elevations in the northern Palatinate Forest, i. H. in the stump forest and Otterberg forest , only about 350 to 450  m above sea level. NHN ; they are embedded in larger planed areas and only protrude 100 to 150 meters above them. The mountains, on the other hand, are much more diverse in their southern part, which is also called Wasgau and extends as a uniform natural area across borders to the Zaberner Steige (French: Col de Saverne ). Its small-sized surface shape is u. a. characterized by different mountain shapes - for example, cone mountains , the height of which is usually between 450 and 550  m above sea level. NHN fluctuates. They often carry bizarre rock formations that have been used in a number of cases for the construction and location of castles .

Since not all mountains of the Palatinate Forest could be included in the list at hand, a selection had to be made based on various criteria. The selection criteria were primarily geomorphological (e.g. rock , relief, etc.), biological (e.g. flora such as forest cover and composition ), cultural-historical (e.g. castles , former places of worship ), tourist ( e.g. observation towers , huts of the Palatinate Forest Association etc.) and infrastructural features (e.g. traffic routes , industrial use , etc.).

The table is divided into a total of 7 columns, with columns 1 to 5 being sortable and columns 6 and 7 not being sortable. Due to the relatively low height of the Palatinate Forest, columns for dominance and notch heights of the individual mountains were omitted. Topographical map material (TK 1: 25000) and the online service ("map viewer") of the State Office for Surveying and Geospatial Information in Rhineland-Palatinate , as well as the online map service of the landscape information system of the nature conservation administration in Rhineland-Palatinate (LANIS ) served as important sources of information ) .

The first column, "Mountain", contains a list of the names of all the mountains selected here, the order of which is determined by their height - from the highest to the lowest values; The designation and spelling are based on the conventions of the State Office for Surveying and Basic Geographic Information in Rhineland-Palatinate. This column also contains the location ( geographic coordinates ) of the relevant mountain that can be clicked with the mouse .

In the second column, "Height", the height of the individual mountains above sea level is given. Column 3, "Natural area", and Column 4, "Partial landscape", are based on the concept of the natural spatial structure of the Palatinate Forest , whereby the mountains of the low mountain range selected here were assigned to the overarching natural areas and partial landscapes. Smaller sub-landscapes of the natural area are also represented by at least one or two mountains. In column 5, “District, Municipality”, the distance (as the crow flies ) to the nearest municipality is given as a further aid to orientation in addition to the district in which the mountain in question is located . Column 6, "Comment / s", contains brief information (e.g. on geology , relief, forest, cultural and historical features, accessibility, etc.) about the respective mountain in key words ; In doing so, suitable publications on regional studies and special Palatinate guides were primarily used. Insofar as suitable images were available, these were inserted in column 7, "Image".

table

As mentioned above, columns 1 to 5 of the table sorted by height in meters (m) above sea level in the initial view can be sorted by clicking on the symbols next to their headings. In the “Mountain” column, alternative names are put in brackets, in small print and in italics . If the same name occurs several times, this column contains the place names in small print and in brackets to distinguish them.
