Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Jacques

The single nave nave of the church, consecrated to James the Elder , is extended with a semicircular apse and framed by two side chapels that form a false transept. The fortified bell tower has loopholes and twin windows . In 1946 and more recently the church has been fully restored. The choir is embellished by three glass windows . One of them shows St. Jacob with a scallop on his hat, a pilgrim's staff , a shoulder bag and a canteen . The window pays tribute to the many pilgrims who have taken the route via Vézelay. Another window is dedicated to St. Rochus , on which he can be seen with his dog. The third window is done in a more modern style in bright colors, especially blue. A star, a scallop shell, a sword and the inscription “Compostelle” can be recognized as ornaments . In the chancel of the church there is a well-preserved sideboard in the form of a wall niche in the wall of the choir. It is decorated with a keel arch with several ribs.

Château d'Orion, former lay monastery

Château d'Orion

It is originally the building of the former lay monastery. It was built not far from the parish church in the 14th century, and has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. The German family Premauer bought the castle in 2003 and restored large parts of it. Today it is a guest house and a meeting place with regular cultural events. Elke Jeanrond-Premauer won the European Citizens Prize on behalf of the castle's team in 2013 .

Pondepeyre farm

It is an example of several old farms in the community. Its irregular masonry of pebbles and stones, its few small windows are signs of the old age of the house. The framing of the windows and doors with ashlar , for all the modesty that the farmhouse conveys at first sight, suggests a certain wealth of the owners at the time of construction.

Ossau-Iraty

Agriculture is traditionally the most important economic factor in the municipality. Orion is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham “Kintoa”.
