Location of the local community Willingen in the Westerwaldkreis
Willingen is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Rennerod .
Geographical location
The community is located in the Westerwald between Siegen and Limburg on the border with the State of Hesse . The Nister rises in the village and flows into the Sieg after 64 kilometers . The highest mountain in the Westerwald, the Fuchskaute, belongs to the place .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1413 as Wildungen . In 1440 the place was attacked by troops of the Counts of Sayn in a dispute with Nassau-Beilstein and partly burned down, but unlike several similarly treated villages in the area, it was not desolate. At this point the place must have had its own chapel. In the 1770s the community bought a house as a schoolhouse, but it burned down in 1805. On September 13, 1717 there was a fire that destroyed seven houses and six barns. On July 4, 1805, 32 houses burned down. Willingen had a Heimberger by 1707 at the latest .
The oldest surviving population names for 1562 13 Vogt and three private people in the place. In 1607 twelve men are named, in 1650 nine men, eight women and 20 children. In 1738 the place had 31 fireplaces, in 1782 there were 251 inhabitants and in 1818 264.
In the vicinity of Willingen there were several villages that have since fallen into desolation : Brennfeld was located east of Willingen. It was first mentioned in 1535 and was deserted by 1562 at the latest. At the beginning of the 17th century, the towns of Willingen, Waldaubach, Möhrendorf and Waigandshain argued over the rights of use of the former Brennfelder meadows. Manhausen , which was first mentioned in 1413 and was deserted by 1558 at the latest, must also have been located near today's municipal boundaries between Willingen, Möhrendorf and Waigandshain, as was Schmidthain , first mentioned in 1511 and already deserted in 1535 , which was probably the location of a forest forge . Katzenhausen was about 1.5 kilometers northeast of Willingen. The place was first mentioned in 1403.

coat of arms
Blazon : "Under a green arch, shield head , inside two golden arnica flowers, in gold a half, rising, blue wedge, raised by a gold-grooved, black vault."
Justification of the coat of arms: The vault with the wedge that widens towards the lower edge of the shield represents the spring of nests with the outflowing nister on the Fuchskaute. |
