Venice International Film Festival 2018
The 75th Venice International Film Festival ( 75th Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica in Italian ) took place at the Lido from August 29 to September 8, 2018 . Alongside the Berlinale and the Cannes Film Festival, they are among the three most important A festivals in the world and were under the direction of Alberto Barbera for the 7th time . The US historical film Aufbruch zum Mond (First Man) by Damien Chazelle with Ryan Gosling in the role of astronaut Neil Armstrong was selected as the opening film . The biographical thriller Driven by British director Nick Hamm was chosen as the final film .
This year, the jury president of the international competition, in which the Golden Lion was awarded for the best film at the festival, was the Mexican director Guillermo del Toro . The Italian actor Michele Riondino was chosen to host the opening ceremony and the final award gala .
The Canadian film director David Cronenberg (participant in the 2011 competition ) and the British actress Vanessa Redgrave ( Coppa Volpi as best supporting actress in 1994 ), who were awarded the Golden Lion as an honorary prize for a lifetime achievement, were already the winners .

The President of the Jury for the 2018 Venice Film Festival is Guillermo del Toro . The Mexican director, film producer and screenwriter took part in the competition in 2017 and won the main prize with the fantasy film Shape of Water, which later also won an Oscar . Del Toro was first invited to Venice in 1997 with the horror film Mimic , in what was then the Mezzanotte sub-section . In 2006 he was a member of the jury for the Luigi de Laurentiis Venice Award for the best debut film at the festival. Festival director Alberto Barbera praised the filmmaker for “his lively imagination” and “his unusual sensitivity” and praised him as “friendly, curious and enthusiastic jury president”. Del Toro himself described his obligation as an "immense honor and responsibility".

The official program for the 75th edition was presented during a press conference in Rome on July 25, 2018. 21 feature films compete for the Golden Lion. Films that were produced or completed after September 9, 2017 could be submitted.

Orizzonti

The Orizzonti (German: "Horizonte") section is dedicated to new trends in international film and primarily presents unconventional films, including feature films, documentaries and experimental films. Both short and feature films are accepted.
The international jury was chaired by the Greek filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari (participant in the 2010 Golden Lion competition ). Other jury members were:

Venezia Classici
The Venezia Classici series ( English Venice Classics ) has been presenting restored classic films as well as documentaries about filmmaking and individual filmmakers since 2012. Part of this is the award of prizes for the best restored film and the best documentary, which is awarded by a jury of 26 film students under the direction of the Italian director and screenwriter Salvatore Mereu .

Since 2017, the Venice Film Festival has held a competition for contributions that take on virtual reality (VR). The jury is headed by the Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier and is complemented by the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco and the French actress Clémence Poésy .

Settimana Internazionale della Critica
The Italian film critics association Sindacato Nazionale Critici Cinematografici Italiani organizes the International Critics' Week ( Settimana Internazionale della Critica - SIC), during which international debut films are selected by an independent commission. It was modeled on the "Quinzaine des Réalisateurs" at the Cannes Film Festival .
